To work as a member of The Kirkwood's In-Patient Unit team, assisting nursing staff to provide a high standard of direct nursing care to patients and their families.

Main duties of the job:

  • Provide a nursing support role within a skilled, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Effectively communicate with patients, visitors, and colleagues to help maintain patient wellbeing and comfort.
  • Have experience working in a caring environment, which could come from working in people's homes, care homes, or clinical settings.
  • Hold NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, or equivalent.
  • Work effectively in a varied team to ensure care is carried out effectively and efficiently while maintaining a caring, compassionate approach.

Role Summary:

  • Assist nursing staff to provide a high standard of direct nursing care to patients and their families.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Carry out nursing care in accordance with hospice policy, individual care plans, and patient wishes.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to achieve a high standard of care for patients and their families.
  • Develop good communications with the patient and their family, passing on all relevant information to the Primary Nurse / Nurse in Charge.
  • Inform the Primary Nurse / Nurse in Charge of any change in the patient's condition.
  • Liaise with other hospice staff as necessary to maintain the comfort and well-being of the patient.
  • Respect the privacy and dignity of the patient at all times.
  • Accurately communicate telephone messages to or from the Primary Nurse / Senior Staff Nurse.
  • Adhere to agreed procedures for the care and custody of patients' valuables and property.
  • Escort patients as requested by the Primary Nurse / Nurse in Charge.
  • Exercise care and economy in the use and maintenance of hospice property and equipment.
  • Be involved in verbal and written reports under the supervision of the Primary Nurse.
  • Relay queries or concerns of any visitor to the Primary Nurse / Nurse in Charge.
  • Respect confidentiality regarding all patient and hospice information.
  • Assist with the promotion of good staff morale, giving support and help to others as appropriate.
  • Participate in annual appraisal as per The Kirkwood's policy.
  • Participate in surveys or audits as required.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, hazards, or complaints to the nurse in charge.
  • Maintain general tidiness throughout the bed area.
  • Attend staff meetings and discussion groups.
  • Attend study days or educational visits to meet identified personal and professional development needs.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Work in accordance with the values of The Kirkwood.
  • Participate in The Kirkwood's performance and development review process.
  • Undertake any other duties required by The Kirkwood's Management team commensurate with the post.
  • Undertake annual mandatory training provided by The Kirkwood.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality as a condition of employment.
  • Respect the ethos and values of The Kirkwood and its services and comply with its policies, procedures, and regulations.

Person Specification:

Experience:
  • Experience of working in a caring environment.
  • Experience of working in a hospice environment.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Willingness to participate in education and training provided by The Kirkwood.
  • Ability to work in line with information governance requirements.
  • Understanding of the importance of safeguarding and confidentiality.
  • Aware of the impact of loss and bereavement on self and others.

  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Belief in, and ability to work with, The Kirkwood's ethos and values.
Qualifications:
