Role Overview: Senior Healthcare Assistant supporting the delivery of personal care duties and clinical duties for patients under supervision of registered healthcare professionals. Works a 4-shift system (early, late, twilight, night) to meet patient needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with personal hygiene, toileting, continence aids, catheter and stoma care.
  • Carry out moving and handling, use mobility appliances, and correct patient positioning.
  • Assess pressure areas and skin integrity and take necessary measures to prevent pressure injuries.
  • Measure and monitor patient output and record physical measurements.
  • Take and record blood sugar specimens.
  • Carry out simple dressings and remove venflons.
  • Update patient records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist patients to meet nutritional needs as outlined in their care plans.
  • Maintain patient safety and adhere to health, safety, and security legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and productive care environment, complying with hygiene standards.
  • Communicate all relevant information to Registered Nurses promptly and professionally.
  • Assist in resolving issues and complaints at the local level and report outcomes to line managers.
  • Maintain and develop own competence, working towards level 2 in numeracy and literacy if not already achieved.

Qualifications & Eligibility:

  • Essential: Demonstrable numeracy and literacy skills at Level 1 (Grade D/3) or equivalent.
  • Essential: Previous experience working in a healthcare setting.
  • Essential: Understanding of the concept and application of confidentiality.
  • Essential: No level 3 or higher qualification in healthcare.
  • Essential: Resident within the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Desirable: Demonstrable numeracy and literacy skills at Level 2 (Grade A-C/4-9) or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare.

Training and Apprenticeship: The successful candidate will be recruited onto the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship. Upon successful completion, eligible learners can progress onto a full-time, non-apprenticeship Adult Nursing degree programme at the University of Lancashire, with support from both the university and the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Practice-Based Pathway teams.
