The Role of the Cover Manager
To record all teacher absence (planned and sickness) and liaise with staff and supply agencies to ensure that classes are appropriately supervised and have access to the work that has been set.
To supervise classes in the absence of the timetabled teacher so that pupils can continue to receive teaching and learning to the standards of The Academy, Selsey.

Key Duties and Responsibilities of the Cover Manager
- To supervise classes and deliver planned lessons when the timetabled teacher is unavailable.
- To register classes and distribute work as set by the timetabled class teacher.
- To manage supply staff ensuring they know what lessons they have and where they will find the work.
- To supervise behaviour and record disciplinary incidents.
- To help children understand set work.
- Collect and collate work from students.
- Reporting on supervised classes to the timetabled teacher to enable them to plan follow up lessons.
- Supporting and encouraging all systems used throughout the academy to raise achievement.
- Liaise with staff who are absent to obtain essential information
- Liaise with supply agencies to ensure that, when internal cover is not available, we get quality staff, with the
- appropriate safeguarding clearance, at the best price.
- Liaise with supply staff to introduce academy processes and systems to support the health and wellbeing of all.
- Supporting teachers by feeding back information from covered lessons.
- Feeding back to appropriate colleagues any concerns regarding students.
- Supporting staff to achieve constructive working relationships with students.
What We’re Looking For
- A commitment to safeguarding: You must demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding requirements when managing and welcoming external supply staff.
- Prior experience in an educational environment, specifically within classroom supervision, exam invigilation, or school administration.
- Exceptional organizational and logistics skills to efficiently record teacher absences (both planned and sickness) and seamlessly coordinate daily cover schedules.
- Strong classroom management skills with the ability to confidently supervise classes, maintain high standards of behaviour, register students, and accurately record disciplinary incidents when covering lessons.
- Academic literacy to help students understand work set by absent teachers and safely collect/collate completed work.
- Excellent communication skills to act as the central point of contact for absent teachers, internal colleagues, and external supply staff.
- The ability to build positive relationships with both students and staff, supporting academy-wide systems to raise student achievement.
- A community mindset, with a willingness to support the wider school life by assisting with exam invigilation, extra-curricular activities, or school trips as needed.
