The post aims to lead an internationally excellent, independent research programme in fundamental plant biology with relevance to legumes or other rotation crops.

Key Relationships

  • Internal: Work collaboratively with all levels of staff within the Institute to enhance research and capabilities.
  • External: Collaborate and communicate regularly with staff on the Norwich Research Park, national and international collaborators, funding bodies, government departments and industry stakeholders.

Main Activities & Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage an internationally recognized, high-profile and innovative research programme.
  • Contribute to strategic thinking and planning, supervise and mentor postdoctoral researchers, technicians, students and visitors, support career development and maintain a positive research culture.
  • Disseminate findings through peer‑reviewed publications, conferences and media.
  • Secure research funding through grant proposals, manage group budgets, ensure compliance with health & safety, data management and quality assurance.
  • Enhance socio-economic impact via partnerships and commercial opportunities, participate in committee and steering groups, contribute to public engagement, and act as an ambassador.

Education & Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject – Essential
  • Substantial postdoctoral research experience – Essential

Specialist Knowledge & Skills

  • Significant track record of internationally competitive research with a strong peer‑reviewed publication record.
  • Deep and broad understanding of the scientific background of the proposed programme.
  • Ability to envisage and articulate longer‑term objectives and impact on UK agriculture.
  • Capacity to formulate and lead an innovative, world‑class research programme.
  • Knowledge of JIC/NRP research fields and benefits of locating at JIC.
  • Measures of esteem such as invited talks, editorial appointments, external panel membership (essential for tenured appointments).
  • Success in leading research and interdisciplinary collaborations (desirable).

Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Strong team player, working with diverse skill sets to reach a common goal.
  • Effective communication with people at all levels, both inside and outside the Institute.
  • Ability to develop innovative approaches and cohesive scientific plans.

Department

Biochemistry and Metabolism – researchers investigate the structure and function of biological macromolecules and fundamental aspects of plant and microbial metabolism to understand mechanisms underpinning metabolic diversity and manipulate proteins, carbohydrates, small molecules and DNA. You will work alongside a diverse community of researchers across various disciplines, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages strategic input at all levels.

Facilities and Support

The role includes a full‑time Research Assistant, a well‑equipped laboratory, a Laboratory Manager, and a media preparation team. The group benefits from cutting‑edge technology platforms including bioimaging and microscopy, proteomics, biochemistry, structural biology, crop transformation and horticultural services. JIC’s field experimentation station provides a seamless research experience.
