Main Purpose of Job

This job will be undertaken as a Modern Apprenticeship and so it is recognised that the post-holder will be undertaking appropriate in-house and external training and development. To assist under supervision with all work undertaken by the farm and field services section and gain experience in a broad range of practical and field research operations. Work as part of the team providing general support to the science group.

Main Duties of Postholder

  • To undertake training both internally and externally and learn practical skills required to successfully gain modern apprenticeship.
  • To receive training in all aspects of the work required to be undertaken by the section.
  • To assist the fruit team managing and maintaining all fruit plots on the institute.
  • To assist with cereal trials including sowing, maintenance and harvesting.
  • To assist with potato trials including ground preparation, planting, maintenance, and harvest and transporting harvested crops to store.
  • To assist with commercial cereal work including ground preparation, maintenance and harvest of crops.
  • To assist with the maintenance of the estate and machinery used by the department.
  • To understand and comply with health and safety regulations, the James Hutton Institute Health & Safety policy and specialist safety procedures appropriate to farm, field, and glasshouses work.
  • Any other duties as required.

Person Specification

  • Essential: National 5s, including Maths and English
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Desirable: Highers, Tractor driving experience, Experience of working with agricultural equipment.
