The work undertaken by The James Hutton Group is right at the top of the global agenda tackling problems such as the impact of climate change and threats to food and water security. To support the delivery of our scientific colleagues we have a range of roles. Currently, our Research Support team has a vacancy for a Modern Apprentice.

Main Purpose of Job

The Modern Apprentice based in Invergowrie will work on relevant aspects of research costings, funding applications, claims submission and financial management of awards, under the guidance of the Research Support Manager and the Research Support Officers, and in collaboration with other Research Support team members, to ensure ongoing administration of both pre and post award functions.

Main Duties of Postholder

  • Pre-award costing and applications for funding
  • Cost funding applications and administer the submission process
  • Monitor the status of applications during the application process
  • Record award notifications and administer award acceptance documentation, including reviewing terms and conditions of funding
  • Post award financial administration
  • Set up new projects for post-award financial management including initial budget profile
  • Prepare invoice requests as instructed by the Research Support Officers
  • Assist the Research Support Officers to prepare project files for auditing and retrieve back-up documentation from the financial system when required
  • Research project information
  • Update project records for contractual changes, additional funding, extensions and budget reprofiling
  • Help to maintain and manage the Institute’s research information, including the research contracts database and related documentation
  • Other duties as required by the Research Support Team

Person Specification

Education/Experience/Skills

  • Essential
    • Expected to have obtained or gained SVQ Highers in English, Admin or Finance
    • Expected to complete a Level 6 Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQs) in Finance, and/or Business/Administration
    • Computer literate with basic skills in Microsoft Excel and Word and evidence of use of modern computer software
    • Evidence of good written and verbal communication
    • Numerical skills
    • Organised and with good attention to detail
    • Punctual and reliable
  • Desirable
    • Relevant work experience in Finance and Administration
    • Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
    • Drivers’ licence would be an advantage
