Your Opportunity as the Scientist, Uncrustables Formulations-Frozen Handheld & Spreads Research & Development Team. The Scientist practices and encourages creativity to drive innovation and solve technical problems. They will execute projects designed to result in new or improved products by leading technical teams and developing work plans independently.
Location: Corporate Offices in Orrville, Ohio
Work Arrangements: Ability to work a hybrid model; a typical week in office is 40-50% in office and up to 100% when lab/pilot plant/manufacturing plant support is needed. Start times based on work needs will be before 8 AM on occasion.
In this role you will:
- Lead formulation development of new and existing formulas for Uncrustables and build subject matter expertise.
- Utilize conceptual and practical expertise in formulation and basic knowledge of related disciplines in development.
- Ensure formulations are compliant with regulations such as, but not limited to, nutrient profiles and claims.
- Coordinate and manage laboratory, pilot plant and scale-ups for projects at JM Smucker (JMS) and contract manufacturing locations.
- Work independently, guided by functional processes, with guidance only in complex situations (e.g., when decisions have functional or organizational impact).
- Develop and publish technical documentation within specification and lab notebook systems.
- Conduct analytical testing, analyze data, and articulate findings through written and verbal summaries.
- Partner with technical team members to develop key tasks and project plans for timely completion of goals; may informally lead teams.
- Actively collaborate and leverage relationships within Research & Development (R&D) and cross functional teams to achieve project goals.
- Provide coaching and function as a resource for colleagues with less experience as part of our Basic Belief and Commitment to Each Other philosophy.
- Assume an advisory role to internal teams such as operations, technical services, and procurement.
- Become fluent and participate in JMS Key Element and Quality programs to support R&D.
- Embrace and actively participate in company's inclusion, Diversity and Equity (ID&E) initiatives.

What we are looking for:
- Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor of Science Degree or higher (required); Food Science, Cereal Grains Science, or Engineering (strongly preferred).
- 5+ years of technical experience in R&D or another technical discipline.
- Cereal grains technical experience in test baking, crop-year evaluation, milling, and/or blending.
- Technical understanding of dough, bread, and/or cereal based goods transformations and the effects of additives on performance.
- Strong experience with food formulations or process engineering, and record of leveraging this experience to develop, qualify, and launch product innovation.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Initiative-taking with the ability and desire to work independently.
- Proven success leading projects from benchtop to scale up and commercialization.
- Approximately 20-30% travel annually; concentrated around project scale-up periods and project learning plan deliverables.
- Food safety foundation - PCQI training a plus.
