The Laboratory Technician will support the day-to-day operation of a pioneering molecular diagnostics laboratory, supporting a new novel diagnostic endometrial test, used within fertility treatment.

Working under the supervision of the Senior Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will assist with sample receipt and booking-in, sample tracking, RNA extraction, c DNA synthesis, droplet digital PCR (dd PCR), routine laboratory testing, equipment maintenance, stock control and quality activities.

All duties must be performed accurately and in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS), ISO 15189:2022 requirements and relevant health and safety and data protection requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, book in, label and prepare clinical specimens for testing.
  • Check specimen information and escalation discrepancies or unsuitable samples.
  • Maintain accurate sample identification, tracking and traceability records.
  • Assist with RNA extraction and purification from clinical specimens.
  • Assist with c DNA synthesis and preparation of samples for molecular testing.
  • Assist with dd PCR workflows, including reagent preparation, plate setup, droplet generation, amplification and post-run activities.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing within the defined scope of the role and under appropriate supervision.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and analysers following training and competency assessment.
  • Carry out routine equipment cleaning, maintenance, operational checks and basic troubleshooting.
  • Prepare, label, aliquot and store reagents, controls and consumables.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory, equipment maintenance and quality control records.
  • Assist with stock monitoring, ordering, receipt and storage of laboratory supplies.
  • Participate in internal quality control, quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
  • Report specimen issues, equipment faults, incidents, deviations and non-conformances promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and contamination-controlled laboratory environment.
  • Support validation and verification activities where required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with UK GDPR and laboratory data protection requirements.
  • Work within the limits of personal competence and seek guidance when required.
  • Undertake other appropriate duties as requested by the Senior Biomedical Scientist or Laboratory Director.

Qualifications

  • BSc or BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or another relevant life science discipline.
  • Knowledge And Experience
  • Previous practical laboratory experience gained through employment, placement or academic study.
  • Experience handling or preparing biological samples.
  • Ability to follow SOPs and written instructions accurately.
  • Understanding of safe laboratory working practices.
  • Understanding of specimen identification, traceability and accurate record keeping.
  • Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
  • Good organisational, communication and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work accurately, both independently and as part of a small laboratory team.

  • Experience preparing master mixes or setting up PCR plates.
  • Experience using laboratory analysers, automated equipment or a Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Experience carrying out routine equipment maintenance or quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of ISO 15189:2022, molecular contamination control and UK GDPR.
  • Previous experience in an Associate Practitioner, laboratory technician or similar role.
