We’re excited to share a Marine Engineering apprenticeship vacancy now open for applications at Cheetah Marine in Ventnor. Cheetah Marine continues to lead Europe in the specialist design and construction of power catamarans. Cheetah Catamarans are renowned in the commercial world where time at sea is dictated by the weather conditions a boat can operate in. Excellent stability and rough weather capabilities are crucial to sea conditions that many Cheetahs work in daily, year in, year out.

We combine our customer’s specification with our knowledge and experience gained from building over 350 catamarans. We are looking for a driven and practical Marine Engineer Apprentice to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to begin a career in marine engineering, working on a variety of vessels and systems while learning from experienced engineers.

As an apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing marine mechanical and electrical systems, contributing to the build and servicing of high-performance boats.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Assist with installation of marine engines, propulsion systems, and associated components
  • Support maintenance and servicing of outboard engines
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults
  • Assist in installation of onboard systems (fuel, cooling, steering, electrical)
  • Carry out basic electrical work, including wiring and component fitting
  • Support testing and commissioning of vessels prior to delivery
  • Use tools and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment
  • Follow technical drawings, manuals, and instructions under supervision
Essential Requirements:
  • Strong interest in engineering, mechanics, or the marine industry
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical skills
  • Good problem-solving ability and attention to detail
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Basic maths and English skills
Desirable (but not essential):
  • Interest in boats, engines, or mechanical systems
  • Previous hands-on experience (e.g., working with tools, vehicles, or machinery)
  • Relevant school or college subjects (engineering, mechanics, electrical)
Qualifications required:
  • Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK. Proof of this will be required.
  • GCSE grade C/4 or above in English & Maths (or equivalent qualification). This is a mandatory requirement for the level of the apprenticeship.
Working Hours:

38 hours per week. Monday to Friday.

Apprenticeship Standard:

Level 3 Marine Engineering Apprenticeship. 4-year apprenticeship programme. Alongside your practical daily work, you’ll take part in off-the-job training—dedicated time within your working week to develop your knowledge, skills, and behaviours through any new or online learning.

Wage:

£8 per hour with potential to increase depending on experience.
