The role
Reporting into the Head of Platform Strategy, the Social Media Manager will oversee channel management and video publishing across The Independent’s social platforms (Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, X, etc.). This role covers both the Independent’s News output and Original programming from the Studio team. As well as distributing video content, the successful candidate will produce visual, industry-leading social image posts and craft engaging social copy. The role requires a passionate and creative individual with a deep understanding of social platforms and channel management.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
- Distribution & Launch Support: Manage end-to-end distribution of social news content for Independent social platforms and growth areas like Independent Studio Podcasts (including distribution on Podcast platforms such as Acast). Provide support during project launches, setting up new channels etc.
- Community & Brand Safety: Execute active community management (moderating comments, managing takedowns) and drive audience engagement via Stories and Broadcast channels.
- Content & Strategy: Create high-impact social assets (images/carousels) to drive engagement and traffic referrals. Gather social trends, regularly monitor the competitive landscape and identify opportunities we can learn from.
- Data & Analytics: Monitor and analyse our social media performance, tracking key metrics including video views, engagement and revenue. Run a data-driven feedback loop with Independent’s video journalists and editors to optimise video performance.
Essential skills and experience
- Experience in social media management (Brand, Publisher or Creator account)
- Experience in creating visual thumbnail images using image editing software such as Adobe or Canva.
- Excellent understanding of social media platforms and their algorithms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.).
- Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling and concise social media copy.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in creating and editing video content (e.g., using tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Capcut).
- Passion for news, current affairs and culture.
- An eye for viral and engaging content.
