The Opportunity
Are you a commercially minded finance leader who thrives on turning complex data into actionable strategy? We are seeking a Head of Finance to join our senior leadership team.
In this pivotal role, you will serve as the financial architect of our School, reporting directly to the Headmaster.
You will balance high-level forecasting and board-level reporting with the hands‑on management of our daily financial health.
We are looking for a seasoned professional—either fully qualified (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) or Qualified by Experience (QBE) through significant tenure in a similar senior capacity.
This role requires the depth of insight and leadership maturity that comes with established experience; it is not suited for those at the newly qualified level.
- What You’ll Do
- Strategic Advisor: Act as a key advisor to the Headmaster and the Board, driving the 3–5 year financial plan and preparing annual budgets.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee all day-to-day accounting, including AP/AR, General Ledger, Payroll, and Revenue Recognition.
- Reporting & Insight: Prepare monthly management accounts and termly re-forecasting, providing clear, jargon‑free commentary for Governors and non‑financial budget holders.
- Compliance & Control: Ensure robust internal controls are in place to maximise efficiency and mitigate risk, while managing tax filings and statutory compliance.
- Strategic Projects: Lead financial appraisals for new business cases and oversee the management of bursaries and scholarships.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and motivate the finance department staff to ensure a high‑performing and collaborative culture.
- The Rewards
- We believe in looking after our team as well as they look after our school. In addition to a competitive salary, you will enjoy:
- Enjoy an industry‑leading holiday allowance of up to7.2 weeks per year, ensuring you have plenty of time to recharge.
- Full access to our school facilities, including the gym and swimming pool, set within our stunning 46‑acre parkland.
- A generous employer pension contribution of up to 12% and Death in Service benefit for peace of mind.
- Complimentary meals during your shift, free onsite parking, and a friendly, collaborative team culture.
- We invest in your future with clear opportunities for professional development and a comprehensive Employee Assistance Program.
- What You’ll Bring
- A Substantial track record as a Head of Finance, Financial Controller, or a similar senior lead.
- ACA/ACCA/CIMA is advantageous, but we highly value candidates with extensive "qualified by experience" backgrounds.
- Advanced Excel skills and a deep understanding of financial reporting software and forecasting models.
- The ability to translate "complex numbers" into clear insights for the Headmaster and the Board of Governors.
- A strong sense of ethics and the ability to lead by example in an educational environment.
While experience in a school setting is desirable, your financial leadership and ability to assimilate complex law/tax matters are the priority.
Leweston School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
