Visiting Music Teacher (VMT) Piano in London

Hours of Work: Circa one day of teaching per week term time only engaged on a self‑employed basis, but it is possible that there will be more hours of teaching available once new applications for lessons are received ahead of September.

Reports to: Director of Music (as well as the Head of Keyboard)

The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools seeks to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Teacher of Piano who will inspire a love of music and high levels of motivation to progress and perform in our students. The successful candidate will have experience as a performer and teacher at all levels, and be willing to teach students from beginner level to Grade 8 and beyond, across both the Junior and Senior Schools (age 7‑18).

They will be flexible and pro‑active in their approach, have good communication skills, and provide high calibre lessons for pupils, enabling them to perform musically to the high standards expected by the School and to achieve their full potential in music examinations and concert performances as appropriate, as well as enjoying, and feeling motivated by, their musical journey. This will be achieved primarily through one‑to‑one lessons, but may include assistance with duets/trios, concerts, and performance coaching as required.

Our VMTs are responsible for organising their own teaching timetable, but are supported by the Music Administrators where necessary.

The Music Department at Eltham is an exciting place to be. Over 60% of our pupils learn at least one instrument, and numbers in the Junior School are even higher; recent years have seen the creation of 5 new practice rooms to meet the ever‑increasing numbers of pupils learning an instrument. We have over 50 ensembles rehearsing every week, led by a wide variety of music staff, from small‑scale chamber ensembles to our flagship Symphony Orchestra, and over 60 concerts and events take place every academic year.

The Music Department currently consists of the Director of Music, Head of Academic Music, Head of Junior School Music, seven Heads of Section (Wind, Brass, Strings, Piano, Singing, Percussion, Chamber Music), one further academic music teacher, two Music Administrators, a Graduate Music Assistant, a professional accompanist and a team of 32 further visiting instrumental teachers.
