About the Role
The Shift Manager is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and performance of a production shift within the THG Blackpool manufacturing site, producing tablets and capsules across a 2‑shift operation (M–F). This role focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and compliant operations, while driving performance against production targets and embedding consistent ways of working. The Shift Manager will act as a hands‑on, visible leader on shift, working closely with operators to ensure output, quality, and safety standards are met. Working under the guidance of the Site Manager, the role will also support continuous improvement initiatives and team capability development, helping to stabilise and enhance site performance. As a Shift Manager in Blackpool you will:
- Shift Leadership & Operational Delivery
- Lead and coordinate all production activities during the shift to deliver the production plan safely and efficiently.
- Take accountability for shift performance across safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
- Act as a visible, shop floor‑based leader, setting standards and driving accountability.
- Ensure effective deployment of labour, materials, and equipment.
- Drive performance against key KPIs (output, efficiency, downtime, waste, labour utilisation).
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times during the shift.
- Enforce adherence to GMP and site compliance standards, maintaining audit readiness.
- Conduct shift‑based safety checks, briefings, and incident follow‑up.
- Promote a strong, practical safety culture through daily behaviours and engagement.
- Quality & Production Standards
- Ensure all production activities meet required quality standards and specifications.
- Support investigations (RCA), deviations, and CAPA activities.
- Drive improvements in right‑first‑time, reducing waste and rework.
- Escalate quality issues in a timely and structured manner.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of 5–15 operators.
- Set clear expectations, monitor performance, and provide regular feedback.
- Support training, onboarding, and skill development across the shift team.
- Drive engagement and foster a positive, accountable team culture.
- Equipment & Process Performance
- Work closely with engineering support to ensure equipment reliability.
- Support delivery of basic asset care and preventative maintenance activities.
- Identify and respond to downtime issues, escalating where required.
- Drive adherence to standard operating procedures and process consistency.
- Support effective management of labour and materials within the shift.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
- Ensure performance improvements do not compromise safety or quality.
- Identify and implement practical, shift‑level improvements to enhance performance.
- Support wider site improvement initiatives led by the Site Manager or central teams.
- Encourage problem‑solving and continuous improvement mindset within the team.
- Communication & Reporting
- Provide clear handovers between shifts, ensuring continuity of operations.
- Report shift performance, issues, and risks to the Site Manager.
- Ensure effective communication across functions (Quality, Engineering, Planning).
What skills and experience do I need for this role?
- Experience in a manufacturing or production leadership role (e.g. Team Leader, Supervisor, Shift Manager).
- Experience working in a regulated environment (GMP, food, pharma, nutraceutical, or similar).
- Proven ability to manage teams and deliver against production targets.
- Hands‑on leadership style with strong shop floor presence.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, shift‑based environment.
- Experience in tablet, capsule, or food manufacturing.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous improvement tools.
- Understanding of performance metrics such as OEE, waste, and efficiency.
