Graduate Quantitative Analyst - Energy Risk Modelling | London (SW1)
£45,000 base + discretionary bonus + potential for equity scheme (in time)
We’re working with a company offering an innovative new energy hedging solution. Rather than selling a hedge, it protects energy-intensive businesses against price moves through an insurance policy. Its clients include airlines, shipping operators and large industrials. A typical example: an airline buys a policy that pays out if jet fuel rises above an agreed level. The team is roughly half insurance professionals and half former energy traders.
They are hiring a graduate to join a small quant team of four, reporting directly to the Head of Quant.
What the role involves
The quant team sits at the centre of the business. Any data that needs analysing or modelling comes through it, and every number shown to a client is signed off by it. Current work includes:
- Pricing models for the sales and product desk
- Margin and liquidity models, built with the Chief Risk Officer
- Backtesting
- Analysis comparing the firm’s products with traditional hedging strategies
- A standalone dashboard for clients
The team spends time with clients directly and work regularly with the CEO. Few graduate roles in energy or finance give you this much variety or exposure this early.
What they are looking for
- A degree in maths, physics, engineering or another quantitative subject from a strong university
- Some coding, ideally in Python, used on real projects as well as coursework
- An interest in trading and financial markets that you can point to in what you’ve actually done
- The ability to explain your work clearly to people without a quantitative background
You don’t need any knowledge of energy or insurance. That can be learned on the job.
Location
You’ll be mostly in the office for the first few months, then there is potential to work from home one or two days a week.
Process
- A remote introductory and technical interview
- A take-home case study of up to three hours, followed by a short call to talk it through
- A final interview in person with senior colleagues
The client is moving quickly. To apply, or for a confidential conversation first, message Patrick Burlton at Lodestone.
