Your input will contribute to a model designed to give all young people earlier and more meaningful exposure to the world of work.

What are we looking for?

  • Essential
    • Experience within local government, public sector, or a related delivery environment
    • Understanding of how policy translates into local implementation
    • Ability to think strategically and contribute at board level
    • Confidence to provide constructive challenge and independent perspective

Personal qualities

  • Pragmatic and solutions-focused
  • Comfortable operating in a developing, early-stage environment
  • Motivated by improving outcomes for young people
  • Able to balance strategic oversight with practical realism

What will you be doing?

The How2Hub is a fully inclusive platform connecting education to employment from Year 6 onwards. It enables schools, employers, colleges and universities to deliver structured, real-world career experiences aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks, the 2026 UK Education White Paper, and the Careers & Enterprise Company Modern Work Experience framework. We are now appointing a trustee with local government or public sector experience to support the next phase of development and regional alignment.

What you will do:

  • Provide strategic oversight on alignment with local authority priorities
  • Guide engagement with Careers Hubs and regional partners
  • Offer insight into policy, funding routes, and delivery structures
  • Provide constructive challenge to support scalable implementation

Current position

  • Working with schools and education partners
  • Platform build in collaboration with the University of Bedfordshire
  • Partnership activity with North Hertfordshire College
  • Engaging with the Careers & Enterprise Company ecosystem

Time commitment: Approx. 4 board meetings per year, plus light-touch input between meetings.

Why this matters: Too many young people are expected to make decisions about their future without exposure to real workplaces. The How2Hub addresses this earlier — starting from Year 6 — ensuring structured, inclusive access to employer encounters.

Barrier & Enabler

  • Barrier: Fragmented delivery across education, employers, and local systems limits consistent access to meaningful work experiences.
  • Enabler: A structured, scalable platform aligning stakeholders early creates a shared pipeline from education into employment.

Additional context: The How2Hub is being developed with academic collaboration and active engagement from schools, employers, and further education partners. The model is designed to align with national policy direction and local delivery structures.
