We are looking for a confident, hands-on Assistant General Manager to support the General Manager in the day-to-day running of the Hope & Anchor. This is a highly operational role suited to someone comfortable leading shifts in a busy pub environment, maintaining high service standards, and supporting and motivating a front-of-house team. You will play a key part in ensuring smooth daily operations across food and drink service while upholding company standards and contributing positively to the guest experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations & Service
  • Support the General Manager in delivering against agreed budgets and performance targets
  • Act as Duty Manager, taking responsibility for the pub during allocated shifts
  • Lead busy food and bar services, ensuring consistent standards and smooth service flow
  • Handle guest queries, feedback and complaints in a professional and timely manner
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, presentation and venue upkeep at all times
  • People Management
    • Support the supervision, motivation and day-to-day management of Front of House staff
    • Assist with recruitment, onboarding and training of new team members
    • Support rota planning, staff deployment and shift management
    • Assist with absence management and holiday approvals in line with company policy
    • Lead by example on the floor, particularly during peak trading periods
  • Stock, Cash & Controls
    • Assist with bar and Front of House stock control
    • Support ordering, deliveries, stock rotation and waste control
    • Assist with cash handling, PDQ controls and end-of-day procedures
    • Monitor uniform, equipment and cellar standards
  • Sales & Revenue
    • Actively support upselling of food, drinks and promotions
    • Encourage team engagement with sales initiatives and venue offers
    • Support events, promotions and seasonal initiatives where applicable
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Support compliance with licensing laws, food safety, health & safety and fire safety requirements
    • Ensure safety procedures are followed during all shifts
    • Maintain awareness of emergency procedures and act appropriately when required
  • Leadership & Deputy Duties
    • Deputise for the General Manager during periods of absence
    • Support the communication and implementation of company standards and procedures
    • Act as a positive ambassador for the Hope & Anchor at all times
    • Escalate operational or people issues appropriately and in a timely manner

    • Previous experience in a supervisory or management role within a pub or hospitality business
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, service-led environment
    • Strong customer service and team leadership skills
    • Organised, reliable and confident in making operational decisions
    • Flexible approach to working hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays

    This role is offered on a fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave. The contract is expected to last up to nine months but may end earlier or later depending on the return date of the substantive postholder.
