The Home for Little Wanderers COVE located in Plymouth, MA seeks a High School Math Teacher. Southeast Campus (SEC) is a co-ed residential treatment program which also has a year-round Massachusetts-approved Chapter 766 private special education school, Southeast Campus School. The program is located on a 53-acre site in scenic Plymouth Massachusetts. SEC is licensed to serve residential and day students ages 7 to 18. The educational and residential services at Southeast Campus together provide an environment where students and residents can build self-esteem, and grow both academically and socially. There is emphasis on promoting positive social skills, reducing academic and behavioral regression, and providing exercise and fun.
Under direction of a Principal, the Certified High School Math Teacher creates and implements instruction in a core academic subject area to multiple small-ratio, therapeutic classrooms of special education students primarily presenting with emotional impairments and performing at varying academic levels; utilizes behavioral management and related crisis intervention activities in the classroom; contributes academic insights to multi-disciplinary treatment team activities as a portion of student therapeutic treatment plans.
Essential Functions
- Develops lesson plans, activities, and assessments that promote active learning and differentiates lessons to a variety of learning styles and modalities. Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities and prepares reports on student progress and development.
- Provides individualized academic instruction in a core subject to students of wide-ranging academic skill levels. Assists Lead Special Education Teacher in planning and implementation of individualized educational programs for assigned students.
- Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities in collaboration with an interdisciplinary teaching team. Researches and collects educational resource materials.
- Encourages and monitors the progress and development of individual students and uses information to adjust teaching strategies.
- Maintains current knowledge of the facility/agency’s behavior management principles, system, and procedures, including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training. Participates in application of TCI in the classroom including crisis intervention, use of restraints when required, processing with children during incidents, and teaching and modeling of social and emotional skills and growth.
- Participates as a member of student/client multi-disciplinary teams, provides information regarding the child’s progress in an educational setting and receives multi-disciplinary advice and guidance to facilitate achievement of treatment, behavioral, and educational goals. Meets and maintain liaison with collaterals as required and serves as student advocate.
- Provides monitoring and coverage as needed in the program, which may include monitoring of lunch, recess, halls, and/or chaperoning on field trips, etc.
- May be required to carry a mobile device.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education And Experience
- Massachusetts Educator Licensure required. SPED certification preferred.
- Bachelors degree and knowledge in field of designated assignment or subject (such as English, Math, Science, vocational training, computer science, etc.) required.
- Previous classroom experience required and experience with program specific population of children is highly desired.
- Computer literate including Microsoft Office and with the ability to learn new software applications.
Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, and climbing stairs. May require the ability to effectively restrain children using proper techniques. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to calmly and effectively talk to children.
