An established Cambridge institution is looking for an experienced Senior Butler to join its team. This is a varied role combining high-quality food and drink service with team supervision across formal dining, private functions, conferences and events. The role offers the opportunity to work across a range of settings, from student dining and Formal Hall through to private dinners, conferences and larger events.

Key responsibilities

  • Supervise Assistant Butlers and casual service staff, allocating daily tasks and maintaining high standards of service.
  • Oversee the smooth running of food and drink service, including the Servery, dining areas and function rooms.
  • Support the planning and delivery of private functions, conferences and events, including room set-up and guest service.
  • Liaise with kitchen and events teams to coordinate requirements, bookings and service arrangements.
  • Support stock control, billing information, staff rotas, induction and training, while ensuring food hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained.

The ideal candidate

  • Previous experience in a similar food service, hospitality or events environment.
  • Experience supervising or supporting service staff, with the ability to maintain high standards through a practical and supportive approach.
  • Strong communication skills, with a calm, diplomatic and discreet manner.
  • Good attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise effectively and work accurately under pressure.
  • Knowledge of food safety and special dietary requirements, alongside basic IT skills and a willingness to undertake relevant hygiene and alcohol licence training.

The role is full-time, averaging 80 hours per fortnight including meal breaks, worked on a shift system covering some evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. Overtime is available when required, with enhanced rates applying in line with the agreed arrangements. Benefits include 25 days' annual leave plus 8 bank and public holidays, uniform, car parking whilst on duty subject to availability, an auto-enrolled pension scheme after three months' service and free meals whilst on duty when the kitchens are open.
