We are looking for a General Maintenance Assistant for one of our clients, supporting the maintenance and upkeep of a large and varied estate in the centre of Cambridge. This is a practical, hands-on role within an in-house maintenance team and would suit someone who enjoys varied work and working in a historic environment.
The role reports to the Senior Maintenance Assistant and supports skilled trades including electricians, plumbers, builders, decorators and carpenters. The post involves both planned and reactive maintenance across multiple buildings of varying ages and construction.
Role purpose
The General Maintenance Assistant will provide general maintenance support across the site, carrying out a range of routine and reactive tasks. Duties include general repairs, compliance-related checks, moving furniture, condition surveys and reporting faults both verbally and in writing. The role also provides general support to the wider maintenance team as required.
Key responsibilities
- Supporting compliance duties, including setting up rooms for teaching and events
- Carrying out general repairs as directed
- Moving furniture and furnishings
- Assisting with routine maintenance of plant and equipment to meet statutory and operational requirements
- Undertaking tasks such as shower head cleaning, meter readings, ladder inspections and building condition surveys
- Reporting faults, defects and maintenance issues clearly
- Responding to maintenance issues and emergencies across the estate
- Carrying out any other duties appropriate to the nature of the role
Work is carried out across a wide site area and includes working in buildings with stairs, basements and roof spaces.
Person specification
Knowledge and experience
- Experience working in a building maintenance or similar environment
- Basic IT skills, including use of email, record keeping and smartphone technology
Skills and personal attributes
- Adaptable and able to use initiative within set guidelines
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable working at height
- Positive attitude with a methodical approach to work
- Punctual and well presented
- Flexible approach to duties and working arrangements
- Able to use a provided bicycle to travel between sites
- Full driving licence required to drive work vehicles
Hours: 39 hours per week Monday to Thursday: 8.00am to 5.00pm Friday: 8.00am to 4.00pm
Meals: Free lunch provided where duties cover the lunch period
Access: No on-site parking available
