The High School of Glasgow is seeking to employ a dynamic, enthusiastic and inspirational Teacher of Spanish from August 2026 to join our highly successful Modern Languages Department.

The department currently consists of four full time teachers, three part time teachers and one language assistant. The department comprises six classrooms and a departmental base, all equipped with modern audio-visual technology including SmartBoards, and all pupils have access to iPads.

All pupils are given the opportunity to study French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. French is introduced into the Junior School curriculum at Primary 1 level and is a core subject in the Senior School until the end of Second Year. Most pupils study French up to Fourth Year and a good number continue to Higher and Advanced Higher. Mandarin was introduced in 2020 and has grown steadily in uptake over the last six years. German, Mandarin and Spanish are introduced to all First and Second Year pupils (two periods weekly, on a rotational basis) and become an option from Third Year onwards. There are presentations in all languages up to and including Advanced Higher. Italian and Japanese are offered as part of the DofE Award Scheme. Uptake in Spanish sees candidates in all certificate levels from National 5 to Advanced Higher.

The successful candidate would be expected to teach all levels of the course. In session 2025-26 there are 29 pupils studying National 5 Spanish in Third Year and 14 in Fourth Year. Six pupils are studying Higher Spanish and five are studying Advanced Higher. The ability of prospective candidates to offer a second language, in addition to Spanish, is strongly desired.

The department has consistently achieved excellent results in national examinations. In 2025, 100% of pupils achieved Grade A passes at Advanced Higher, with 80% and 84% achieving Grade A passes at Higher and National 5 levels, respectively.

The successful applicant will be a committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Spanish with high standards of professionalism, who should be willing to make a contribution to the extra-curricular life of the School. The appointment will begin on Thursday 13 August 2026.

Candidates must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). The appointment will be subject to a successful application to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Application forms can be downloaded from the School website and should be emailed to vacancies@hsog.co.uk by 12 noon on Friday 8th May 2026.
