HEMS Specialist Paramedic Lead | University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

The service is delivered as a partnership between Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity (HIOWAA), South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) and Isle of Wight Ambulance Service (IWAS). Responding by helicopter/ emergency response vehicle, we deliver a team of highly skilled pre-hospital trained doctors and specialist paramedics to the scene of an incident, bringing the hospital to the patient when time is critical. Attending incidents including cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions, falls and assaults, our life-saving service is operational 365 days a year, both day and night and includes delivery of advanced skills such as pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia, analgesia, sedation and blood transfusions.

This is a senior clinical leadership role, which includes undertaking Lead of the Day shifts, along with clinical shifts as part of a doctor-paramedic critical care team or independently as a critical care paramedic. On occasion, you will also work at the SCAS EOC as part of the dispatch crew. You will be responsible for mentoring a cohort of paramedics and dispatchers in the service, as well as attending the Care Group Leadership Team meetings and having responsibility for an area of clinical service delivery.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

You will need to be an experienced HEMS clinician with a minimum of PGDip in Advanced Clinical / Paramedic Practice or equivalent Level 7 study. As a HEMS SPL you will be a current ALS and APLS provider and utilise your skills both as part of an enhanced care team, working alongside a team of senior doctors providing critical care interventions including pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia and administration of blood products, as well as providing an enhanced care response as a solo car-based CCP. You will also need to evidence experience of mentoring and supervision of other clinical staff, operational service delivery and will have experience of service development or quality improvement.

HEMS Specialist Paramedic Leads (SPL) works as the senior member of a paramedic team, as a solo practitioner or in partnership with a HEMS doctor to deliver critical care to high acuity patients in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas.

HEMS SPLs will use collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical care and management of patients.

The SPL works within a multidisciplinary team to deliver advanced clinical practice, clinical leadership and provides supervision, support, structured teaching and mentorship for multidisciplinary professionals, to facilitate ongoing education, training and development.

To deliver operational support including decision-making and problem solving to ensure the smooth running of the team both in-hours and out-of-hours.

The SPLs take a role in governance, education, audit, research and service development with an agreed individual portfolio of responsibility. This includes the implementation of multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, utilising evidence based in consultation with medical and AHP HEMS staff.

Take responsibility for continuing professional development, supplemented by work based and service provided training.

Develop the HEMS Critical Care Service through active and positive engagement with all stakeholders involved with service improvement, education and clinical governance.

To work collaboratively with colleagues from local ambulance services and the HIOWAA charity to foster partnerships and deliver high quality services.
