Teacher of History of Art – maternity cover Sept. 2027 to March 2028

Reporting to: Head of Sixth Form

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic and dynamic Teacher of History of Art to provide maternity cover on a part-time basis from 1st September 2027 to the end of March 2028. The post will involve teaching twelve History of Art lessons per week across the Lower and Upper Sixth, timetable to be set in the Spring of 2027. If a candidate can offer an additional subject, this would be advantageous and may allow for a fuller timetable to be built.

The successful candidate will have a genuine love of art history and the expertise to teach the Pearson Edexcel specification, covering visual analysis, the themes of Nature and Identities, and the periods of the 19th century avant-garde and 20th century modernism. Experience of teaching these modules and of marking A Level papers accurately and consistently would be ideal. The ability to teach engaging lessons that spark curiosity and encourage open-minded discussion is essential. Qualified Teacher Status is useful but not essential, however candidates without it must hold an MA in History of Art as well as the ability to demonstrate excellent teaching. Experience of mentoring students through university applications and/or EPQ projects would be very welcome.

As the only specialist in the department for the year, the successful candidate will plan, teach and assess independently, so confidence and initiative will matter. We are looking for a teacher with excellent classroom management, energy and a gift for encouraging discussion.

History of Art at Harrodian is a friendly, convivial department with enthusiastic students, many of whom go on to study the subject at university. Classes are small, usually between six and twelve students. The aim of the department is to enrich students’ lives through learning about art, as well as to succeed in earning their A level. Our results are consistently high and we run day trips to galleries and museums in London to bring the course to life. Each year, our students enter ARTiculation, Write on Art and the Spoke competitions, which gives them a chance to engage with art beyond the syllabus. Our students are ambitious and they value the additional support the school offers for these opportunities. Our teaching staff must be a team-player and demonstrate an enthusiasm and willingness to assist in study-related trips and events. Sharing a tutor group with another tutor would be helpful, although this may not always be required.

At Harrodian, we are continually developing our range of teaching resources, including our tech-driven materials for the optimum use of student iPads within lessons. KS3/4 students are all equipped with an iPad and the familiarity/ability to use these devices is therefore somewhat of an advantage, although training will be given where needed and the History of Art department makes much less use of iPads than some other departments.

Working days and hours

Full-time working days and hours at Harrodian are Mondays from 08h00 to 17h00 and Tuesdays to Fridays from 08h15 to 17h00. Five staff training days are held over the year, at the start of the Autumn, October half, and Spring terms. Term dates are published on the School’s website HERE .
