The predicted salary is between 45000 - 50000 ÂŁ per year.
This role will lead key initiatives including delivery of NORAD (Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation) environmental obligations, completion of HALO’s global emissions baseline and carbon‑reduction plan, and integration of environmental sustainability into operations, proposals, and programme support across HALO’s global portfolio in compliance with IMAS 07.13.
HALO is strengthening its global environmental capability to meet organisational sustainability goals, rising donor expectations, and sector standards. Reporting to the Global Environmental Manager (GEM), this new role will play a central part in driving that progress by supporting the delivery of environmental obligations across key grants – most notably NORAD – and by advancing HALO’s global Environmental Management System. You will lead completion of HALO’s first organisation‑wide emissions baseline, develop a practical and achievable carbon‑reduction plan, and help guide programmes in integrating environmental sustainability into operational planning, proposals, and delivery. You will work directly with country programmes to improve the environmental performance of offices and remote camps, introduce best‑practice waste and resource‑management systems, and identify emissions‑reduction opportunities across energy, fleet, travel, and procurement.
Responsibilities
- Conduct technical assessment to establish organisational emissions baseline.
- Design and manage carbon footprint data collection system and integrate into HALO’s systems for ongoing monitoring and reporting.
- Develop and implement HALO’s approach to greening of offices and remote camps, including sustainable use of resources and best practices in management of waste generated.
- Identify and prioritise emissions reduction opportunities across all activities (e.g. energy, fleet, travel, procurement).
- Provide direct support to all programmes in receipt of NORAD funding in delivery of environmental obligations within the grant, including implementation of task level environmental screening.
- Support programmes to identify and implement measures to reduce their environmental footprint in areas such as energy, waste, water and procurement.
- Support HALO’s GEM in implementing HALO’s Environmental Management System across HALO programmes, in line with IMAS 07.13.
- Support HALO’s GEM in rolling out environmental screening across HALO’s programmes, including establishing data collection workflows and monitoring.
- Contribute to development of HALO’s environmental tools and systems, including training resources and MEAL.
- Support programmes in thematic proposal content, ensuring environmental sustainability is integrated and budgeted for.
- Monitor HALO’s main donor base and collate environmental priorities and obligations.
- Support representation of HALO in relevant sector working groups, events and conferences.
Requirements
- Relevant academic qualification in environmental management, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
- Knowledge of greenhouse gas/emissions baselining processes, including data requirements and recognised methodologies (e.g., GHG Protocol).
- Practical experience supporting organisational environmental management, including contributing to or operating within environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001, IMAS 07.13 or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of environmental compliance and safeguards within humanitarian, development, or donor‑funded programmes.
- Proven experience working in field operations in mine action, humanitarian or post‑conflict settings.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical environmental concepts clearly to non‑specialists.
- Strong data handling, analytical, and reporting skills.
- Willingness to undertake international travel, including to challenging environments, as required.
Desirable Requirements
- Demonstrated experience conducting emissions baselines for organisations or large operational portfolios.
- Experience developing carbon‑reduction plans or resource‑efficiency strategies, particularly in operational or humanitarian contexts.
- Good knowledge of and proven professional experience within the mine action sector.
- Experience developing environmental content for donor proposals, concept notes, or programme designs.
- Experience delivering capacity‑building or training on environmental or sustainability topics.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across geographically dispersed programmes.
Travel Requirements
Minimum of 10-15 weeks travel per year depending on programme needs and availability of funding.
