The Hacking Games | Full-time, permanent (6-week probationary period) | Hybrid, 2 to 3 days per week in our London office

About the Role

The global cybersecurity workforce is short 4.8 million people. Most of the industry still hires with CVs and keyword filters. At The Hacking Games we use behavioural signals, gaming data, and problem-solving patterns to find people who think like hackers, whether or not they have ever called themselves one.

We build two products. HAPTAI is how we find the talent. A gamer-native terminal is the candidate's front door. A recruiter hub is where employers assess and shortlist. ACE is our Adversary Chain Engine. It records real attacks and turns them into detection intelligence that defenders can deploy. Both are technically strong. Both are still wrapped in interfaces that undersell what they do. That is the problem this role exists to fix.

This is a design role where visual craft leads. You will own the experience across both products, from the research that shapes it to the artwork that ships.

What You Will Do

  • Set the visual language for ACE and HAPTAI: the attack traces, the persona reveals, the motion, the colour, the moments that make someone stop and look.
  • Design the ACE experience that turns an adversary chain into something a defender reads at a glance: live chain graphs, terrain flow maps, replay walkthroughs, and coverage views.
  • Own the HAPTAI candidate experience. The gamer-native terminal should feel like a game, and the persona report should feel like something worth playing to reach.
  • Evolve the Recruiter Hub so it holds up as we scale into National Programmes.
  • Lead discovery and research across both products, and use what you find to challenge our assumptions rather than confirm them.
  • Build and own the design system. Audit and consolidate our Figma workspace and component library into something the whole team can build on.
  • Work daily with product and engineering to move designs into shipped product.
  • Tell us plainly when a design does not match what the product can do.

A Note on Gaming

A strong connection to gaming is essential. You are either an active gamer or you have designed for gaming products. You understand how people behave in complex, system-driven environments, because that is where our users live.

What You'll Bring

  • A portfolio built on visual craft: original artwork, motion, and colour with a clear point of view. We will look at the art first.
  • Three or more years in product design, with shipped work you led from research through to release.
  • Fluency with generative AI visual tools, and the habit of staying current as they change. You can produce original imagery, texture, and motion, not only assemble components.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools such as Figma Make, v0, Galileo, or Claude, so you can move from insight to several options to a testable prototype without waiting on a dev cycle.
  • Strong Figma skills: component libraries, tokens, and file architecture other people can use.
  • A research-led approach. You find out what is true rather than assume it, and you defend a decision with evidence.
  • Sharp instinct for layout, hierarchy, and consistency, and the judgement to know when a design is ready to ship and when it isn't.
  • Comfort designing inside real product and engineering constraints, with the instinct to push on them rather than accept them.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data visualisation, network graphs, or motion design.
  • Experience designing SaaS products, dashboards, or data-driven interfaces.
  • Familiarity with user-testing tools such as Maze.
  • Curiosity about cybersecurity, hacking, or technical products.
  • Experience designing for a wide age range, including younger audiences.

This Role Suits Someone Who

  • Takes an ambiguous brief and turns it into a direction, without waiting to be told what good looks like.
  • Works fast and adapts faster. You have shipped in intense, high-tempo teams, and you have no patience for process for its own sake.
  • Has a point of view and brings evidence when they disagree. Changes their mind when the evidence points the other way.
  • Wants to build the design function, not inherit one.
  • Thinks in systems and in artwork, and moves between the two easily.

Apply

Email with:

  • Your portfolio. Lead with the work you are proudest of as art, and include at least one case study from research through to shipped design.
  • A short note on your product design experience, your connection to gaming, and how you use AI in your visual process.
