We are looking for a Senior News Reporter to generate political and other national news coverage for The Guardian , with a focus on stories to be published at weekends.

This is a permanent NUJ contract, 9-day fortnight working pattern (including Saturday each week).

About the role

  • Develop scoops and anchor major stories, with an emphasis on UK politics. You will deliver news, features, liveblogs, interviews, background and other material to ensure that important stories are covered, with a particular focus on covering news on Saturdays and generating exclusives for the weekend.
  • Break exclusive news stories with national impact, ensuring they are checked for accuracy and legal compliance.
  • Shape thinking on key subjects across the newsroom, spotting broader social and political trends as well as being confident in making comment on direction of a subject.
  • Working with news editors, you will identify stories and develop the best possible way of telling them in an engaging way for Guardian readers.

About you

  • You will have demonstrable experience of breaking news stories on a newspaper, website or magazine, alongside proven experience of writing features, analysis and other types of journalism.
  • A self-starter, you can work unsupervised with speed and accuracy.
  • You have a strong understanding of important issues and stories affecting the UK, and excellent contacts.
  • Showing knowledge and awareness of the demands of digital platforms, you know how to use social media and multimedia to tell stories.
  • Ideally with a journalism qualification, you will have excellent knowledge of media law.
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.
