The Guardian Foundation is a charitable body whose purpose is to promote global press freedom and access to liberal journalism. Our vision is a world where people have access to reliable information from a diverse range of sources, strengthening their ability to hold power to account.
Through our news and media literacy programmes, we empower children and young people with the critical skills they need to navigate and engage with news in an informed way.
This role will be part of our project in schools and colleges across selected boroughs in London and Greater Manchester, supporting young people aged 7-18 in developing media literacy skills, creating their own news reports, and sharing them with a wider audience. The project will be running from September 2o25 until February 2027 (academic term times only).
The Guardian Foundation is committed to safeguarding the children and adults at risk with whom it works. The successful candidate will be expected to adhere to our policy and code of conduct.

Daily rate: £305 per day/£152.50 per half day
Location: London (covering Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Barking & Dagenham) or Greater Manchester (including Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham and Salford)
Hours: We are looking to recruit casual workers based in London and Manchester who can provide workshop facilitation over the following periods. This includes two paid training days:
London (Primary School Delivery):
Between September 2025 and March 2026, approx. 25 half-day sessions
Between September 2026 and February 2027, approx. 10 half-day sessions
Greater Manchester (Primary School Delivery):
Between September 2025 and March 2026, approx. 10 half-day sessions
Between September 2026 and February 2027, approx. 6 half-day sessions
Greater Manchester (Secondary and FE delivery):
Between September 2025 and June 2026, approx. 8 full day sessions
Between September 2026 and February 2027, approx. 8 full day sessions
There is a strong likelihood of additional shifts in both regions. Please note that this is a guide to the likely number of shifts. As this is casual employment, we cannot guarantee shifts.
About You
This role is ideal for part-time teachers, educators, or freelance facilitators looking to broaden their experience.
- Demonstrated experience teaching or facilitating workshops and confidence delivering sessions to Primary pupils (London) and/or secondary pupils (Greater Manchester)
- Knowledge of the UK education system and relevant curriculum
- Passion for media literacy and empowering young people
- Understanding of the needs of schools and communities in your area
- Confident using digital tools in a classroom setting
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality and diversity
- Willingness to travel within your region:
London: Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Barking & Dagenham;
Greater Manchester, including Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham, Salford (a full driving licence would be desirable)
About the role
This is a crucial role delivering the Guardian Foundation’s news and media literacy programme as directed to the highest standards.
You will lead classroom sessions in schools across your region. Travel within the area is required. Ideal candidates will be community-focused, with an understanding of local challenges. Full training will be provided before you begin delivering sessions.
You will be passionate about inspiring young people about news and supporting them to develop critical media literacy skills. Also included in the role:
- Facilitating teacher training sessions
- Support programme evaluation through surveys, feedback, and reflective input
- Assist with internal and external reporting by providing project updates
- Maintain accurate records and communicate regularly with the project team
- Represent The Guardian Foundation professionally, aligning with its values and mission
