Job Description
About the Role
Our client is seeking a highly capable Senior Commercial Advisor to join their growing Energy and Infrastructure Advisory team, with a focus on decentralised energy systems and the broader energy transition. This senior-level position will play a pivotal role in supporting public and private sector clients across commercial, financial, contractual, and policy-related dimensions of sectors including district heating, combined heat and power (CHP), energy-from-waste (EfW), and integrated local energy systems.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in shaping and delivering complex client mandates, while also helping expand the firm’s commercial advisory capabilities in the Net Zero and low-carbon infrastructure space. This role is part of a growing practice area, aligned closely with the firm’s wider sustainability and decarbonisation service lines (e.g. electric mobility, green infrastructure finance, and energy efficiency).
You’ll be responsible for managing key client relationships, leading advisory projects end-to-end, developing junior talent, and contributing to the business development and growth strategy of the team. This is a high-impact opportunity for someone who wants to drive real-world decarbonisation outcomes through investment-grade commercial advisory.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of complex advisory assignments across decentralised energy and infrastructure investment projects.
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing high-quality insight into the commercial, financial, and policy frameworks required to scale low-carbon infrastructure.
- Oversee or directly manage the development of business cases, commercial models, procurement strategies, financial evaluations, and investment-grade outputs.
- Line manage junior team members and support their professional development.
- Manage internal project delivery processes, budgets, and profitability targets to ensure commercial success.
- Identify and originate new client opportunities, supporting wider business development and bid activity.
- Translate client needs into tailored scopes of work and advisory offerings.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of policy and market trends across decentralised energy, heat networks, and green infrastructure finance.
- Support knowledge sharing, internal upskilling, and mentoring across the advisory team.
- Collaborate with internal teams across technical, financial, and policy domains to integrate insights into holistic client solutions.
- Ensure projects are delivered to the highest quality, managing risks and client expectations proactively.
- Actively participate in business planning, practice development, and innovation of new service offerings.
Professional Experience and Capabilities
- Deep experience in decentralised energy systems, such as DHN, CHP, EfW, or ESCO commercial structuring.
- Strong understanding of the public-private interface, with experience working across both sectors preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of leading or supporting infrastructure investment transactions, including commercial negotiations and stakeholder engagement.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex client engagements.
- Strong commercial acumen and experience managing project budgets and profitability.
- A strong grasp of infrastructure business models, procurement frameworks, and financing mechanisms.
- Highly competent in project and resource planning, as well as managing bid responses and proposal writing.
- Able to generate strategic insights from financial models and translate outputs into commercial recommendations.
- Experienced in developing compelling reports and presentations for executive and board-level audiences.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and confident in working with ambiguity or evolving client needs.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Degree in business, finance, economics, engineering, law, or a relevant discipline.
- A postgraduate qualification such as an MBA or MSc is desirable.
- Relevant professional accreditations (e.g. ACA, CFA, CIMA, IACCM, MEI) are a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and maintain high standards under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to foster collaborative working relationships across teams and clients.
- Committed to continuous learning, development, and industry engagement.
