About the Post

We are looking to appoint a motivated and inspirational colleague with a passion for transforming the life chances of young people as a Cover Supervisor. In this role you will supervise and support students during the short‑term or unforeseen absence of their usual teacher and administer and supervise daily centralised detentions. This offers a progressive, forward‑thinking environment alongside colleagues who share a commitment to the power of education to shape young people’s lives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Join our high‑performing and progressive organisation
  • Take sole responsibility for classes of students on a short‑term basis
  • Work with expert teachers to provide exceptional short‑term cover for absent staff
  • Supervise and administer centralised detentions
  • Register attendance in accordance with school policy
  • Respond to student questions about process and procedures and support the use of associated resources
  • Manage the behaviour of students to ensure a constructive learning environment
  • Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school's policies or procedures
  • Collect completed work and resources after the lesson and return them to an appropriate teacher with comments on learning issues and progress
  • Report through the agreed referral procedures on student behaviour and any issues arising during the lessons
  • Apply originality and creativity to the delivery of learning activities, including straightforward assessment marking
  • Use the school MIS to register students and inform relevant colleagues of attendance, behaviour and rewards
  • Supervise students from Years 7–11 in a centralised detention room 3.15 pm–4.15 pm Monday‑Friday
  • Manage the behaviour of students in the detention room and facilitate completion of specific tasks
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people in accordance with our Safeguarding and Child Protection policies

Who We Are Looking For

  • Passionate about working with young people
  • Minimum of five A‑C GCSE qualifications (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics
  • A likely career intent in education, possibly as a teacher

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of five GCSEs, A‑C including Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • A‑level or equivalent Level 3 qualifications
  • Very good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Experience of general clerical/administrative work
  • Training in relevant strategies in the appropriate curriculum or learning area
  • Ability to travel independently between Twynham School and The Grange School during the working day
  • Desire to pursue a career working with children (potentially teaching)
  • High energy, passion and a clear moral purpose to improve life chances
  • Ability to inspire and relate well to the whole community
  • Emotionally intelligent and resilient, adaptable to a range of situations and able to communicate with students, parents and other professionals
  • A team player comfortable both providing and receiving professional challenge
  • Commitment to personal and others’ professional development
  • Experience engaging with evidence and research to inform practice
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic, with a positive "can‑do" attitude and a solution‑focused approach
