We are seeking an innovative and forward-thinking Head of Computer Science to lead and shape the future of this rigorous, dynamic and rapidly evolving subject area from April or September 2026. This permanent role offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious educator to shape a curriculum that is both academically robust and firmly oriented towards the digital challenges and opportunities of the future.
The successful candidate will be an excellent classroom practitioner with the vision, confidence and curiosity to lead a high-quality Computer Science curriculum across KS3–KS5, ensuring strong academic outcomes while also developing pupils’ digital literacy, computational thinking and understanding of emerging technologies. They will play a key role in preparing pupils not only for public examinations, but for life in an increasingly digital and AI-influenced world.
Alongside responsibility for examination courses, the post holder will have the opportunity to lead curriculum innovation and enrichment, contributing to the wider profile of computing within the school. This includes exploring how developments such as artificial intelligence, data, ethics, and digital responsibility can be thoughtfully and appropriately embedded into teaching and learning, in line with the school’s values and ambitions.
This post would suit either an experienced Head of Department or an outstanding teacher ready to take the next step into subject leadership. You will join a supportive and forward-looking environment in which there is genuine scope to shape the direction of the subject and contribute to whole-school thinking about digital education.
The computing department comprises of three full time and one part time colleagues and has four dedicated computing classrooms. Progress and outcomes at GCSE and A-level computer science are excellent year on year. A vibrant pupil led Computing Society meets twice weekly over lunchtimes. The department has enjoyed significant success at British Informatics Olympiad and BAFTA young game designer competitions.

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) was awarded North Independent School of the Year 2024 and Independent Secondary School of the Decade in 2021. The school continues to be a friendly, fun and supportive environment with high investment in pupil and colleague wellbeing, while insisting upon and maintaining high expectations.

GSAL provides a high quality independent education for 2,100 boys and girls between the ages of three and 18. The main school campus at Alwoodley Gates in north Leeds was purpose built for Leeds Grammar School, which relocated in 1997 from the city centre.
GSAL is academically selective, with consistently excellent A-level and GCSE results. After merger, the school introduced the diamond model of teaching, through which boys and girls learn together up to age 11, then in single sex classes between Year 7 and Year 11, and come together again in sixth form lessons. Form time and extracurricular activities are mixed throughout. Class sizes are usually between 16 and 22.
Academic achievement is at the heart of a rounded education at GSAL, which offers our pupils personal development opportunities and broad experience beyond the classroom. With superb facilities available in school, pupils can take part in sport, music, drama, scouts, CCF, Duke of Edinburgh, debating and much more. We offer an outdoor learning programme and a wide variety of trips at home and abroad. Our lively house system encourages pupils to get involved and have fun.
