An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sports Coach to join our outstanding Sports Department at The Glasgow Academy. An expertise in Hockey is essential to deliver first-class hockey coaching to pupils, encouraging them to gain and develop skills, knowledge and techniques. Knowledge and experience of either Tennis, Cricket or Athletics would be beneficial in order to deliver and support the summer term sports programme.

The successful candidate will have experience coaching Hockey or playing at a high level, with particular experience of coaching 10 to 18 years old.

The role includes daily working hours from 1.45pm-4.45pm Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings (timings flexible depending on home or away fixtures). Additional hours may be necessary from time to time at the discretion of the Director of Sport. This includes six In-Service days, two in August, one in October, one in January, one in April and one in May.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of Sport and liaise with Head of PE/Head of Hockey (and others as necessary) on all duties related to the Sports/PE department. This position is part-time (20 hours per week), term time only, on a permanent contract. Any additional hours out with term-time for example, pre-season training or joining a sports tour would be considered as part of this role with no additional remuneration.

Responsibilities

  • The ability to work well on your own as well as part of a team
  • Experience of working within school sport
  • An ability to work under pressure
  • Deliver the school sport vision through the Hockey programme and beyond
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn how to use SOCS (The Academy's sports administration system)
  • Follow up on any accidents/incidents following Hockey fixtures or training and complete school accident form as necessary
  • Coach year groups and teams as required by Head of Hockey both midweek and Saturdays
  • Participate/lead Hockey tours as required by Director of Sport (no additional remuneration)
  • Attend all Hockey matches/fixtures midweek and on a Saturday as required
  • Organise and publish team sheets for relevant teams on SOCS
  • Ensure that standards of attendance, punctuality, equipment maintenance, appearances and sportsmanship are consistently high
  • Establish a culture of enthusiastic participation, enjoyment, and commitment in all areas of the hockey programme
  • Support the Sports Department sports tracking and pupil player profile process with lead staff in line with the department's reporting system and procedures
  • A willingness, on occasions, to work beyond the stated hours
  • To attend and participate in training and development activities relevant to the role
  • Responsible for ensuring high standards of conduct (and uniform) in line with school policy, practice and Academy values. Manage appropriately any conduct issues that arise and communicate effectively with the Director of Sport who has responsibility for overall management of pupil conduct within the Sports programme

  • Consider the possibility of driving a minibus (if required and comfortable doing so)
  • Provide information to the Director of Sport for Hockey prizes for Sports Prize Giving and any other relevant awards

Daily/Weekly Tasks

  • Meet as necessary with Director of Sport or relevant others to co-ordinate all required tasks.
  • Travel on a sports bus as required from Kelvinbridge to the School Sports Ground or any other relevant venues.
  • Support departmental annual events within your role, including; Prep & Senior Cross Country, P7 TGA Invitational Hockey Tournament, Parents Information Evening, Swimming Galas, Henderson Challenge, Cricket tournaments, Tennis tournaments, Sports Prize Giving and Sports Days.

The successful candidate will be subject to successful PVG membership, 2 references, and may also be required to supply a letter from their doctor stating their mental and physical fitness.
