The Head Bartender at The George in Rye is a full-time, on-site role based in Rye, responsible for leading bar operations and delivering a high-quality guest experience. This role oversees the daily running of The George Tap bar, including preparing and serving drinks, managing stock and ordering, and ensuring consistent presentation and quality.

The Head Bartender trains, supports, and schedules bar team members, maintaining excellent service standards and a welcoming atmosphere for hotel guests, locals, weddings, and events. They collaborate closely with the restaurant and events teams to design and execute seasonal cocktails, wine pairings, and special menus that reflect the hotel’s focus on locally sourced products.

The role also includes handling cash and payment procedures, monitoring compliance with licensing and health and safety requirements, and ensuring the bar remains a focal point of the hotel’s social life.

Qualifications

  • Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently and professionally with a diverse range of guests.
  • Proven expertise in bartending and food & beverage operations, including cocktail creation, product knowledge, and coordination with the kitchen and floor teams.
  • Accurate and reliable cash handling skills, including managing tills, processing payments, and following financial procedures.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or head bartender role within a quality bar, hotel, or restaurant environment.
  • Solid understanding of licensing laws, health and safety, and responsible alcohol service.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team in a fast-paced service environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and events, including weddings and private functions.
  • Relevant hospitality or bar qualifications, and familiarity with local and regional wines and spirits, are highly beneficial.
