The Francis Crick Institute is Europe's largest biomedical research institute under one roof. Our world‐class scientists and staff collaborate on vital research to help prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative conditions.

The Biological Research Facility supports all animal research with a comprehensive animal care and use programme. Within the BRF, the In‐Vivo Imaging (IVI) Facility offers a suite of cutting‐edge multimodal imaging systems including micro‐CT, PET‐MR, SPECT‐CT, optical imaging platforms, a 9.4T MRI and VisualSonics Vevo3100 and Vevo F2 ultrasound systems.

We are now looking for a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist to join the in‐vivo imaging team. In this role you will design, execute and analyse cardiovascular and oncology‐focused ultrasound studies in pre‐clinical models.

What you will be doing:

  • Designing and implementing pre‐clinical ultrasound imaging studies in cardiovascular and oncology research areas.
  • Advising researchers on imaging strategy, study design and technical optimisation to ensure robust and reproducible results.
  • Performing high‐frequency ultrasound imaging in small animal models, including M‐mode, B‐mode, Doppler and strain analyses.
  • Assessing cardiac anatomy, function and haemodynamics in pre‐clinical models.
  • Conducting anatomical and functional tumour imaging to monitor growth, vascularisation and treatment response.
  • Performing ultrasound‐guided injections of cells or therapeutic agents into target organs.
  • Providing scientific guidance and training, supporting data analysis and interpretation, and may take full responsibility for conducting ultrasound studies from conception through to completion.

About you:

  • Degree in biomedical sciences, medical biology, veterinary medicine or a related field.
  • Proven track record in pre‐clinical imaging, particularly ultrasound.
  • Demonstrated experience working with small animal models in a research setting.
  • Technical expertise in ultrasound imaging in cardiology and/or oncology.
  • Ability to design imaging protocols tailored to specific research objectives.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks for pre‐clinical research, including the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and the 3Rs principles.
