Role Purpose
As a Warehouse Shift Manager, you will lead and motivate a team to deliver safe, efficient, and accurate warehouse operations. Operating on a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern, you’ll oversee day‑to‑day activities across goods‑in, storage, picking, packing, and despatch — supporting both store replenishment and e‑commerce fulfilment. You’ll play a key role in integrating automation technology into daily workflows, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a positive, performance‑focused culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership
- Manage all warehouse activities during your shift, ensuring KPIs for productivity, accuracy, and service are consistently achieved.
- Oversee the receipt, storage, picking, packing, and despatch of stock for both retail and e‑commerce channels.
- Effectively plan and allocate resources to meet shifting operational demands.
- Ensure smooth and accurate shift handovers.
- People Management
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Team Leaders and warehouse colleagues, ensuring clear objectives and high levels of engagement.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Manage performance effectively, addressing issues promptly and fairly.
- Automation & Systems
- Support the implementation and day‑to‑day operation of AutoStore and other automated systems.
- Build knowledge of WMS and automation software to troubleshoot and optimise workflows.
- Identify opportunities to leverage automation for improved efficiency and accuracy.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and company policies.
- Conduct regular safety checks, audits, and risk assessments, ensuring follow‑up actions are completed.
- Promote a proactive safety culture across the shift team.
- Analyse operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead or contribute to projects focused on efficiency, cost savings, or service enhancements.
- Champion lean principles and standard operating procedures.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a warehouse supervisory or management role, ideally within a high‑volume retail and/or e‑commerce distribution environment.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and develop operational teams.
- Experience managing shift operations and achieving performance targets.
- Good working knowledge of WMS and warehouse processes.
- Strong organisational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience working with AutoStore or other ASRS / automation systems.
- Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement frameworks.
- IOSH / NEBOSH or similar health & safety qualification.
