We are a leading UK retailer with a network of over 200 stores nationwide and a rapidly growing e-commerce operation. Our distribution centre is the backbone of our supply chain — ensuring that products reach both our retail stores and online customers efficiently and on time. With significant investment in automation technology, including the upcoming installation of an AutoStore system, we’re modernising our operation to support future growth, improve accuracy, and boost service levels across all channels.
Role Purpose: As a Warehouse Shift Manager, you will lead and motivate a team to deliver safe, efficient, and accurate warehouse operations. Operating on a 4 on / 4 off shift pattern, you’ll oversee day-to-day activities across goods-in, storage, picking, packing, and despatch — supporting both store replenishment and e-commerce fulfilment. You’ll play a key role in integrating automation technology into daily workflows, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a positive, performance-focused culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Leadership: Manage all warehouse activities during your shift, ensuring KPIs for productivity, accuracy, and service are consistently achieved. Oversee the receipt, storage, picking, packing, and despatch of stock for both retail and e-commerce channels. Effectively plan and allocate resources to meet shifting operational demands. Ensure smooth and accurate shift handovers.
- People Management: Lead, coach, and develop a team of Team Leaders and warehouse colleagues, ensuring clear objectives and high levels of engagement. Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Manage performance effectively, addressing issues promptly and fairly.
- Automation & Systems: Support the implementation and day-to-day operation of AutoStore and other automated systems. Build knowledge of WMS and automation software to troubleshoot and optimise workflows. Identify opportunities to leverage automation for improved efficiency and accuracy.
- Health, Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and company policies. Conduct regular safety checks, audits, and risk assessments, ensuring follow-up actions are completed. Promote a proactive safety culture across the shift team. Analyse operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Lead or contribute to projects focused on efficiency, cost savings, or service enhancements. Champion lean principles and standard operating procedures.
Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in a warehouse supervisory or management role, ideally within a high-volume retail and/or e-commerce distribution environment.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and develop operational teams.
- Experience managing shift operations and achieving performance targets.
- Good working knowledge of WMS and warehouse processes.
- Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with AutoStore or other ASRS / automation systems.
- Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement frameworks.
- IOSH / NEBOSH or similar health & safety qualification.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary + shift allowance.
- Company pension and benefits package.
- Opportunities for career progression and automation training.
- A fast-paced, forward-thinking environment where innovation is encouraged.
