The Five Islands Academy is seeking a reliable and hardworking Cleaner/Caretaker to join our friendly team at St Martin's Base. We are an all-age, multi-site Church of England academy serving the five island communities of Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin's, St Mary's and Tresco, and our St Martin's Base is a small, close-knit part of that wider island community.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the Five Islands Academy Site Manager and St Martin’s Lead Teacher, playing an essential role in keeping our school clean, hygienic and welcoming for pupils, staff and visitors, and in maintaining the security, safety, cleanliness and upkeep of school buildings, grounds and facilities under the direction of the Sites Manager.

This role is for 13 hours per week across 38 weeks of the school term plus three additional weeks in the school holidays. During termtime, duties include:

  • Daily cleaning of classrooms, corridors, and toilet facilities
  • Ensuring general cleanliness and tidiness of outdoor areas of the school
  • Undertaking regular inspections of the site
  • Reporting significant defects and remedying minor defects

Periodic deep cleans and grounds maintenance can be carried out during school holidays. Hours are flexible in agreement with the Lead Teacher.

About You

You will be self-motivated, reliable and able to work both independently and as part of a wider team. You will take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and safety, and will be comfortable working in a school environment around children and young people. No formal qualifications are required, though previous cleaning and maintenance experience is desirable. You will have basic literacy and numeracy skills, a good understanding of health and safety, and a commitment to confidentiality and child protection. A willingness to undertake relevant training is essential.
