About the role
The FT app is an important part of how subscribers engage with FT journalism, and we believe there is a significant opportunity to go further. We're looking for an experienced Product Manager with a strong background in native and/or cross-platform mobile apps to play a central role in this transformation.
You'll join at a pivotal moment, working alongside our Principal Product Manager, engineering and design colleagues to turn our app strategy into reality, delivering improvements to the app experience and building the capabilities that will support its continued evolution. This is an opportunity to shape a product used by a highly engaged global audience, while helping establish a stronger mobile product discipline within the FT.
What you'll be doing:
- Help shape the future of the FT app.
- Work with the Principal Product Manager to translate our long-term app strategy into clear product requirements, priorities and a deliverable roadmap.
- Bring specialist mobile product knowledge and experience to decisions about the future app experience, challenging assumptions and finding opportunities to make better use of native device capabilities.
- Develop a deep understanding of our customers, their behaviours and the moments in which they turn to the FT, using research, analytics and experimentation to see opportunities.
- Champion a mobile-first approach to product development, ensuring we're designing around the needs of app customers and complementing their web experience.
- Work across product teams to ensure the app delivers a coherent, premium experience that delivers meaningful value for the business, while making effective use of shared FT capabilities.
- Deliver a distinctive, premium mobile experience.
- Own and prioritise defined areas of the app roadmap, balancing customer value, strategic impact, technical dependencies and commercial outcomes.
- Work day-to-day with engineering, design, data and editorial colleagues to take initiatives from discovery through development, release and iteration.
- Help deliver experiences that make the FT more essential to customers' daily routines, including better navigation, discovery, personalisation, notifications, offline experiences and continuity across devices.
- Explore opportunities to make FT journalism more engaging and useful through native mobile interactions and seamless experiences across text, audio, video, data and other formats.
- Collaborate with teams responsible for identity, subscriptions and customer lifecycle to make the app a more effective platform for acquisition, engagement, retention and subscriber growth.
- Establish clear success measures, use experimentation and customer feedback to inform decisions, and continuously optimise the experience.
- Ensure that performance, accessibility, reliability and usability are treated as fundamental parts of the product experience.
- Build mobile product expertise within the FT.
- Act as a source of specialist mobile product knowledge for colleagues across product, design and engineering.
- Share best practices in app product management, including platform conventions, app store requirements, release management, mobile analytics and experimentation.
- Help establish effective ways of working for developing and maintaining high-quality iOS and Android experiences.
- Stay informed about developments in mobile technology, customer expectations and emerging product capabilities, identifying opportunities relevant to the FT.
About you
Essential experience and skills:
- Proven mobile app product management experience: You have owned and delivered meaningful improvements to consumer-facing iOS and/or Android apps, ideally within products with significant scale, frequent usage or complex customer journeys.
- Understanding of mobile technologies: You have practical experience working with native and/or cross-platform development teams and understand the differences, opportunities and trade-offs between architectures. You don't need to be an engineer, but you can engage in technical discussions and understand the product implications of architectural decisions.
- Knowledge of the mobile ecosystem: You're familiar with Apple and Google's platform conventions, app store policies, submission and release processes, in-app purchases, push notifications, device capabilities and the considerations involved in delivering consistently high-quality app experiences.
- Strong product management fundamentals: You're experienced in customer discovery, defining problems and opportunities, prioritisation, roadmap management, experimentation and measuring product outcomes.
- Proven delivery experience: You've worked closely with cross-functional engineering and design teams to deliver products iteratively, navigate technical complexity and balance short-term improvements with longer-term investment.
- Customer and commercial focus: You use qualitative and quantitative evidence to understand customer needs, make decisions and evaluate success. You understand how product experience contributes to engagement, retention and commercial performance.
- Collaborative and influential: You're comfortable working across organisational boundaries, bringing different disciplines together and influencing decisions without relying on formal authority.
- Comfortable with ambiguity: You can operate effectively while technology choices, team structures and delivery approaches are evolving, helping turn strategic ambition into practical action.
Desirable experience:
- Experience working on subscription-based digital products, particularly in publishing, media, content or other habit-forming consumer services.
- Experience developing products that combine native and web-based capabilities.
- Experience with personalisation, content discovery, notifications, offline functionality or other features that drive regular app engagement.
- Experience working with external development partners while retaining internal product ownership.
- Experience helping organisations establish or mature their mobile product development practices.
