Overview
In this role you shape agenda-setting journalism as deputy Big Read Editor, guiding high-impact features across a range of topics. You collaborate with visual storytelling and other desks to craft magazine-style pieces that publish six times weekly. You conceive ideas, refine formats, and ensure copy is sharp, accurate and legally sound. You lead the desk in the editor’s absence and steer special projects that showcase FT journalism. This is a fast-paced, collaborative opportunity to influence what readers see and care about.

Responsibilities
- Generate ideas for a broad range of feature stories aligned with FT priorities
- Commission and shape formats beyond long-form text to enhance storytelling
- Edit longform pieces rigorously to deadline, ensuring clarity, accuracy and legal soundness
- Lead the desk in the Big Read editor's absence and represent the team in meetings
- Develop and manage special projects to showcase FT journalism
- Collaborate with the visual storytelling team and other desks to integrate visuals
Key requirements
- Strong news instinct to identify compelling topics and angles
- Proven editing experience with longform pieces across tech, business & finance, science and economics
- Ability to discuss and debate ideas with FT's senior editors and writers
- Skill in refining pitches and distilling them to essentials with a clear reader takeaway
- Diplomacy to coordinate with reporters and editors across desks under multiple demands
- Ability to manage a team and develop younger talent
- Aptitude for visual storytelling and creative use of graphics
- Capacity to work to tight deadlines and perform under pressure
