Overview
As Legal Counsel at the Financial Times, you will serve as a primary legal contact for Product & Technology, Ad Tech and Payment Processing, translating business needs into practical/legal guidance. You will draft, review and negotiate a range of technology and commercial agreements, including software licences, SaaS, development and SLAs. You’ll advise on data protection and draft data processing agreements, working with senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams. This role sits at the intersection of law, technology and commercial decision‑making within a global news organisation, offering meaningful impact and growth.

Responsibilities
- Act as a key legal contact for Product & Technology, Ad Tech and Payment Processing.
- Provide practical, commercially-focused legal advice aligned with operational needs.
- Draft, review and negotiate technology and commercial agreements (licences, SaaS, development, SLAs).
- Advise on data protection and draft/negotiate DPAs (including Ad Tech, cookies).
- Build relationships with stakeholders across the business, including senior management.
- Collaborate with Procurement, Compliance and Cyber on relevant legal matters.
Key requirements
- Qualified to practise English law, with at least two years’ PQE
- Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, especially technology-related
- Strong knowledge of data protection law (GDPR) and DPAs in Ad Tech/cookies
- Commercially minded with ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels
- Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced in-house environment
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
