Role

The post-holder will be one of a group of specialist nurses working within the fertility clinic. Treatments include IVF and ICSI, Ovulation Induction, Egg donation and Sharing, Egg Recipiency, and Surgical Sperm Retrieval.

Contract and location

This is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week) with weekend duties on a rotation basis. The position is available as a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Location: GCRM Fertility, Glasgow – Scotland’s private IVF clinic. GCRM performs a substantial number of cycles each year and offers a full suite of treatment and diagnostic services, including PGT. The clinic is situated in a business park setting on the outskirts of Glasgow, with ample staff and patient parking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop clinical competence in ART skills, plan and co-ordinate treatment cycles, and undertake investigations such as endocrine profiles.
  • Assist in the management and support of sub-fertile couples before, during and after treatment cycles; create a therapeutic environment tailored to individual needs.
  • Conduct patient consultations before, during and after treatment cycles.
  • Ensure informed consent is obtained and appropriate unit and HFEA consent forms are completed; discuss risks of ART and potential use of gametes for research.
  • Provide information and counselling to enable couples to make informed treatment decisions.
  • Support patients and families in highly stressful situations (e.g., breaking bad news, miscarriage, bereavement, anger management) both in person and by phone.
  • Explain risks such as iatrogenic disease, multiple pregnancy risks, and ethical issues related to research on gametes/embryos.
  • Explain and obtain consent for storage of frozen gametes and posthumous use; discuss disposal of property in case of separation or divorce.
  • Maintain accurate patient records in line with NMC regulations; contribute to written information for patients.
  • Collate data from procedures and transfer to patient notes to satisfy HFEA regulations.
  • Assist with booking patient treatment cycles, plan drug prescribing and liaise with GPs in conjunction with senior nursing staff.
  • Explain individualized treatment schedules, potential drug side effects, and demonstrate subcutaneous injection techniques.
  • Coordinate oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer/intrauterine insemination (IUI), donor insemination, and provide counselling and support with cycle outcomes.
  • Interpret complex clinical information, anticipate problems, and develop care plans following relevant protocols.
  • Prepare equipment for procedures with care, ensuring sterility and adherence to policies; support staff in developing skills as needed.
  • Supervise and assist in patient care before, during and after procedures.
  • Show initiative in assisting medical staff with procedures (e.g., transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval).
  • Work within the legal framework of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and Care Quality Commission standards.
  • Manage difficult situations with competence, following protocols and supporting patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team as required.
  • Ensure emergency/crisis procedures are in place and that patients, relatives and staff are supported during and after events.
  • Ensure COSHH, Infection Control, Risk Management and health and safety compliance within the department.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential record-keeping in line with Trust and HFEA policy.
  • Help senior nursing staff handle complaints and grievances per the unit’s procedures.
  • Support maintenance of pharmacy drug stores including controlled drugs in line with Trust policy and Home Office legislation.

Desirable: previous experience in fertility or women’s health; degree-level education; teaching/mentoring qualification; sonography experience.

Salary: Competitive (Depending on experience)

Location: TFP GCRM Fertility – Glasgow

Working Hours: 37.5 hours, Monday to Friday (weekends required at 1:4)

Pension: Dual contribution pension scheme

Holiday Entitlement: 27 days + Bank holidays (pro rata)
