Eventus Recruitment are seeking an Underwriter to join a highly regarded Building Society based in Manchester. This is a permanent, full-time Underwriter job working Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, within a predominantly remote working model with approximately one day per month in the Manchester office. This Underwriter job offers a salary of up to £45,000 depending on experience, alongside a strong benefits package, flexible working culture and the opportunity to work within a collaborative and supportive underwriting environment. This opportunity has arisen due to continued growth, creating a need for an experienced Underwriter who is confident making lending decisions and assessing cases on their individual merits within the Manchester-based team.
Job Responsibilities
- Assessing mortgage applications and supporting documentation to determine creditworthiness and lending risk
- Making informed and timely underwriting decisions in line with internal policies and regulatory requirements
- Handling complex lending cases including high net worth, self-employed, Buy to Let, HMO, self-build, expat and development finance applications
- Managing an active pipeline of mortgage applications efficiently and accurately
- Communicating underwriting decisions clearly to brokers, customers and internal teams
- Collaborating with processing, business development and wider stakeholders to deliver excellent service
- Maintaining accurate and compliant records of all underwriting decisions
- Keeping up to date with market trends, regulatory changes and underwriting best practice
Person Specification
- Minimum of two years' experience within a mortgage underwriting environment
- Proven experience handling complex lending cases, particularly within higher value lending between £1m-£3m
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial information and assess risk effectively
- Confident decision-maker who can assess cases on their merits rather than relying solely on criteria-based systems
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage directly with brokers and customers
- Comfortable with telephone and face-to-face communication in a professional environment
- Ability to manage workload independently and prioritise effectively within a regulated setting
- Proficiency in underwriting systems and Microsoft Office applications
- CeMAP or relevant financial qualification is desirable
