Role Overview: As a MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation) Electrician, your work will be essential in ensuring the efficient functioning of critical flood defences. In addition to electrical tasks, you will also be involved in operating these defences when the need arises. This role gives you hands‑on responsibility repairing and improving electrical and control‑system infrastructure.
Location: Based at the iconic Thames Barrier in London, you will be part of a highly regarded team known for their expertise and dedication.
Responsibilities:
- Routine and reactive maintenance across a variety of electrical equipment.
- Fault diagnosis and repairs.
- Installation, modification, and replacement of electrical equipment.
- Operational role during trials and flood defence operations.
- Respond to incidents and provide business continuity support during incidents, with additional payment, training and alternative working arrangements available.
Team: You’ll report to the Electrical Team Leader and be part of the Thames Tidal Defences (TTD) MEICA team. The team is responsible for all maintenance across all Low Voltage, High Voltage, telemetry, and control systems across Thames Tidal Defences.

Qualifications:
Essential:- BS7671 17th or 18th Edition.
- Electrical Installation 2360 Parts 1 & 2 or equivalent NVQ Level 3.
- Strong understanding of and adherence to safe working practices and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical installation and maintenance.
- Familiarity with working according to Standards, Regulations and Approved Codes of Practice.
- Proficiency in computer usage, including Microsoft programmes.
- Full valid UK driving licence.
- JIB/ECS card.
- City & Guilds 2391/2394 & 2395 inspection and testing certification.
- Experience in hydraulics, HV distribution, SCADA, instrumentation, or telemetry systems.
Additional Requirements: The role does not qualify for skilled worker sponsorship due to qualifications not mapping across and the requirement to have been resident in the UK for at least the last 5 years to be able to pass and maintain suitable security clearance. Successful candidates will need to pass and maintain suitable security clearance (minimum SC). The candidate must have been resident in the UK for at least the last 5 years.
Working Pattern: 9 day compressed fortnight.
Additional Allowances:
- £4,406 p.a. Inner London Weighting.
- £4,500 p.a. approximate Standby Allowance, calculated at £173.07 per week covering 1 week in 2 over 52 weeks (when trained and competent).
- CNI – £3,000 (when site competent approx. 6 months after starting).
