Psychology Graduate Academic Mentor

Good secondary school, Willenhall

Start September 2026, finish July 2027

1:1 academic support for a student with ADHD

The Role:

Provide dedicated 1:1 academic support for a student with ADHD across the school day. You will help the pupil manage routines, stay on task in lessons, break work into manageable steps, and build confidence with classwork, while feeding back clearly to teachers and the SENCO. The SEND Code of Practice remains the statutory guidance schools follow for identifying needs, putting support in place, and reviewing its impact.

The Candidate:

You are calm, observant, and able to build trust through consistency and clear communication. You want practical school-based experience, you can stay patient in a busy secondary setting, and you are interested in how focused support helps a young person overcome barriers to learning. This role suits a Psychology graduate who wants relevant experience before progressing into educational or clinical psychology.

Requirements

  • - Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • - Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • - Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • - Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • - Career Goals – A desire to pursue a career in educational or clinical psychology.

The School:

This β€˜Good’ secondary school in Willenhall offers the chance to build valuable SEN experience in a setting where structure, consistency, and purposeful support matter.

You will work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO in a role that gives you direct exposure to day-to-day SEND provision, practical intervention, and the support strategies schools use to help pupils with additional needs stay engaged and make progress.

National Careers says SEN teaching assistants support teachers to help children with disabilities and special educational needs, which is exactly why this kind of role is useful if you want grounded psychology-related experience rather than just theory from a lecture hall.
