We are currently seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Support Assistant to work within specialist schools and alternative provisions across Newcastle Upon Tyne. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and helping them achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.
Role
As an SEMH Support Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who may display challenging behaviour, have experienced trauma, or require additional emotional and behavioural support. You will provide both 1:1 and small‑group interventions, helping students access learning and develop positive coping strategies.
Responsibilities
- Support pupils with SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small‑group basis.
- Build positive and trusting relationships with students.
- Assist with behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies.
- Encourage engagement in learning and classroom activities.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and pastoral teams.
- Promote a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with children, young people, or vulnerable adults.
- Experience in education, youth work, care, support work, sports coaching, mentoring, or similar settings is highly desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
