The Downside Fisher Youth Club has existed since 1908 to serve disadvantaged young people in Southwark. It has a large and well-equipped building that requires constant maintenance. It lets out its building and pool to hirers in the daytime that drive income to support its mission. As well as an evening programme of activities and youth club, we have an amateur boxing club and a swim school. We also have a programme of outward bound activities.

We are looking for an inspiring, energetic leader with a can-do attitude, able to build positive relationships within the club and community with a passion for youth work and making a difference to people’s lives.

Job Summary: To manage the staff and premises, with responsibility for all income and ensuring that the charity delivers on its mission to disadvantaged young people in Bermondsey and surrounding areas.

Salary: £40,000-£60,000 FTE, permanent role, part-time working considered.

Main Place of Work: The main place of work is Downside Fisher Youth Club, SE1 2EZ.

Hours: 35 hours, flexible as needed, Monday to Friday.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategic leadership: Develop and implement strategies to achieve organisational goals and objectives. This involves creating a plan of action and communicating expectations clearly to the team.
  • Team management: Supervise and provide guidance to the teams (youth club, boxing, swim school & lettings), fostering a positive work environment and ensuring employees and volunteers are aligned with all Club objectives.
  • Performance oversight: Monitor and evaluate the performance of the entire Club operation - not just individuals. This includes identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to increase success, efficiency and productivity.
  • Financial management: Oversee all financial areas ensuring income received and funds are used appropriately to meet objectives. They may also prepare financial detail for Trustees to consider policy.
  • Human Resources: Authorise appointment and termination of staff and volunteers as budgets allow and as appropriate. Liaison with Team Leaders to ensure alignment with strategic goals.
  • Decision-making: Make critical, time-sensitive decisions to resolve sometimes complex issues and challenges.
  • Risk management: Take a proactive approach to identifying, addressing, resolving and reporting risks as appropriate.
  • Reporting: Preparing reports for trustees and funders, including outcomes for restricted funding.

  • Strategic thinking: The capacity to think long-term, set ambitious goals, and determine the most effective ways to achieve them.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate ideas and information clearly to various audiences.
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical skills and creativity to find solutions to sometimes complex problems and challenges.
  • Finance: A strong grasp of financial processes to manage funds and monitor both income and expenditures effectively.
  • Organizational skills: The ability to manage multiple priorities and oversee complex programming efficiently.
