The Distance is a digital product agency specialising in designing and building high-quality mobile and digital experiences. We work with ambitious organisations to create impactful products that combine strong design, thoughtful product thinking, and robust engineering.

We’re looking for a Product Manager to help lead the successful design of our partner projects and support the technical teams who build them. This role sits at the centre of our delivery process — working closely with partners, designers, developers and testers to ensure projects run smoothly from discovery through to release.

As a Product Manager, you’ll be responsible for designing and coordinating the successful delivery of digital products for our partners. Responsibilities include managing client communication, planning project timelines, designing core features and user experience, coordinating internal teams, and ensuring development work is clearly defined and tested to a high quality. You will work closely with our Product and Operations teams to ensure alignment across strategy and partner needs. This role blends product design, project delivery, and client communication, making it ideal for someone who enjoys working across teams and driving projects forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Communication: Lead partner calls, gather and analyse requirements, provide updates, and manage expectations and dependencies.
  • Product Definition & Design: Translate requirements into product tasks, define user journeys, and work with the Product team and Designers to shape effective digital solutions.
  • Delivery Management: Plan timelines, coordinate teams, manage dependencies, documentation and task allocation, and ensure milestones and releases are delivered successfully.
  • Testing & Quality: Coordinate testing, track issues, prioritise fixes, and support test and production releases.
  • Project Operations: Maintain documentation, project logs, and actions while supporting scope management. Plan resource allocation and run retrospectives to iteratively improve our services alongside the Operations Team.

Essential

  • Experience managing digital or software development projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience facilitating product and discovery workshops with clients and internal teams confidently
  • Experience working with design and development teams
  • Familiarity with digital project management processes, experience with project management tools (we use Jira and Basecamp)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects or workstreams
  • Calm under pressure and able to manage changing priorities
  • Excellent organisational and documentation skills
  • Able to balance partner/product needs with commercial viability

Desirable

  • Experience designing using Design Systems and software, specifically Figma
  • Experience working in a digital agency
  • Understanding of web/mobile app development
  • Experience with product discovery or UX processes
  • Familiarity with app release processes (App Store / Play Store)

Why Join The Distance

  • Work on meaningful digital products
  • Collaborate with experienced designers and engineers
  • Be part of a supportive and thoughtful team
  • Opportunity to shape delivery processes and product outcomes

The role comes with a competitive salary (depending on experience), up-to-date MacBook (replaced biannually), workplace pension, minimum of 31 days holiday entitlement (as we close at Christmas), and hybrid and flexible working hours (quarterly get-togethers in York).

If you’re passionate about building great digital products and enjoy working at the intersection of clients, design, and engineering, we’d love to hear from you. Ideal candidates will include a short cover note and/or a video demonstrating why they are interested in the role. Send your application to jobs@thedistance.co.uk (we are not interested in hearing from agencies for this role).

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace in line with the Equality Act 2010. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and actively promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across our team.
