Head of Mathematics at King James Academy Royston

We are seeking a new team member to join us as Head of Mathematics at King James Academy Royston. The role is based in our secondary team (Y7-11), on the East Site, and is suited to a teacher with a track record of securing excellent academic outcomes at Key Stage 4. This is an exciting opportunity for a committed and skilled leader to lead the next phase of development within the Mathematics department, strengthen numeracy across both primary and secondary phases, and inspire a genuine love of Mathematics across our school community (Years 5–11).

The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for Mathematics, setting a clear vision for curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment across Years 5-11. Central to the role is the design and implementation of a coherent, carefully sequenced and ambitious Mathematics curriculum from Year 5 to Year 11, ensuring:

• Strong academic outcomes at GCSE
• Deep conceptual understanding through a carefully sequenced curriculum
• Coherence in learning from Years 5 to 11
• High expectations and purposeful classrooms
• Expert subject knowledge and professional growth across the mathematics team

The department is developing a coherent Year 5 to Year 11 curriculum that builds deep mathematical understanding and prepares pupils for success at GCSE. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the next stage of the department's development, strengthening curriculum, pedagogy and outcomes while making a significant contribution to the school's continued improvement. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a leader who enjoys school improvement work and wants to make a tangible difference for students and staff.

The secondary mathematics team comprises five members, including a Second in Department and a Lead Practitioner. The department is line managed by the Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum). Mathematics in KS2 is taught by class teachers and coordinated by a KS2 Assistant Head of School. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues on the primary phase to support curriculum coherence and progression in mathematics from Year 5 to Year 11.

The role may be suitable for someone seeking their first department leadership position, stepping up from responsibility for leading a Key Stage or serving as Second in Department. Equally, it may suit an experienced leader of Mathematics who is seeking a new opportunity to make a positive impact within a new school community. The ideal candidate will be an excellent classroom teacher, bring positivity and enthusiasm, and have a genuine passion for working with young people.

King James Academy Royston is a Years 5-11 school with approximately 950 students on roll. The school was formed in 2019 as a result of the amalgamation of two middle schools and an upper school. Since 2020, the school has been part of the Diamond Learning Partnership Trust. Located approximately 12 miles from Cambridge, Royston benefits from strong transport links via both road and public transport, with Royston having a mainline train station on the London to Cambridge line.
