The Daily Beast is seeking a motivated and entrepreneurial editor to join our dynamic newsroom and help us as we expand into a new platform: Substack. We are growing our presence on the platform and want to bring more of our brilliant stories and voice to the tens of millions of people who are there. You will have experience editing timely news and commentary, a sharp editorial eye, and the ability to drive compelling and impactful coverage. You are able to juggle multiple complex stories, edit columns and newsletters (on a broad range of subjects), manage reporters and contributors, and also assist the editors running point on the Beast's breaking news desk. You are a self-starter and problem-solver who will work seamlessly across our newsletter and newsroom teams, take initiative, learn from constructive feedback, and work with minimal supervision. And most of all know how to bring fun and voice to stories.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Beast's in-house reporters and external contributors to ideate and edit compelling content for our network of Substack publications, and help develop new newsletters and partnerships on Substack.
  • Write brilliant headlines and subject lines that stand out and compel readers to read our stories.
  • Assign and edit stories for the Daily Beast's website, providing guidance to reporters to guarantee timely, accurate, and high-quality content.
  • Monitor news trends to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Maintain high journalistic standards and uphold the Daily Beast's editorial voice.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of four years of experience in journalism, with at least two years in an editing role.
  • Experience with newsletter production and optimization - ideally specific to Substack and its platform.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to make quick editorial decisions.
  • Deep understanding of digital media and audience engagement strategies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines with a small team.
  • Prior knowledge of content management systems - and social media management - is a plus.

The pay range for this position is $90,000 to $120,000 (£70,000 to £90,000 GBP). The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, performance, and other factors. The range listed is just one component of the Daily Beast's total compensation package. The Daily Beast provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401K employer matching program, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
