Job description

We are seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our Legal Team at the Westmorland and Furness Council headquarters in Kendal, Cumbria. This role involves handling corporate and governance legal work, providing advice on local government law, constitutional matters, decision-making processes, and strategic projects.

The successful candidate will have experience in advising on local government issues, including Members\’ Standards, complaints regarding breaches of the Council’s Code of Conduct, and Ombudsman matters. Excellent communication skills, ability to work under pressure, and familiarity with local authority governance are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice on local government law and governance matters
  • Preparing reports and legal opinions for the Council, committees, and officers
  • Attending council committees and working groups
  • Handling Members\’ Standards and Ombudsman complaints
