About this opportunity

Are you looking to develop your career in highways, traffic management and road safety?

Who we are looking for…

We're looking for an enthusiastic and organised Assistant Traffic Management Technician to join our South Lakeland Traffic Management Team. This is an exciting opportunity to support the development and delivery of traffic management, parking and road safety schemes that make a real difference to local communities.

Working alongside experienced colleagues, you'll gain exposure to a wide range of traffic management activities, supporting projects from initial investigation and design through to delivery. This role is ideally suited to someone with an interest in highways, civil engineering, transport planning or traffic management who is keen to develop their technical knowledge and build a long-term career in the profession.

What you'll be doing

  • Supporting the preparation, design and delivery of traffic management, parking and road safety schemes.
  • Preparing plans, works packages and supporting documentation for traffic management projects.
  • Collecting, reviewing and analysing traffic, parking and road safety data to inform scheme development.
  • Using mapping systems, plans and technical information to support project delivery.
  • Assisting with the processing of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs).
  • Liaising with contractors and colleagues across the Highways service to support project delivery.
  • Assisting with consultations and engagement activities for proposed traffic management schemes.
  • Responding to enquiries from residents, councillors and stakeholders.
  • Undertaking site visits to collect information and monitor scheme progress.

About you

We're looking for someone who:

  • Is organised, reliable and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Has strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is confident using Microsoft 365 applications and other IT systems.
  • Has good attention to detail and enjoys problem-solving.
  • Can read and interpret maps, plans and technical information.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Is committed to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Has an interest in highways, engineering, traffic management or transport-related projects.
  • Knowledge of the South Lakeland area and wider Westmorland and Furness road network would be advantageous.

Experience of traffic management, highways, engineering or project delivery would be beneficial, but not essential. Full training and support will be provided, and we welcome applications from candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn.

As part of the team, you will assist with the preparation, design and processing of both temporary and permanent traffic schemes. This includes developing works packages for small-scale projects to improve road safety and reduce casualties, introduce parking schemes and other traffic management projects. You will also support the processing of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs), contribute to data collection and analysis, and help with public and stakeholder engagement.

This is a predominantly office-based role with some site visits required. You’ll work closely with colleagues across the Highways service and be involved in responding to enquiries, preparing reports, and issuing instructions to contractors. The role is public facing, so strong communication, interpersonal, and written skills are essential.

We’re looking for someone who is proactive, a team player, and has a flexible approach to work. Excellent customer service skills, and confidence using Microsoft Office and other computer systems are also important.
