The advertised salary includes a supplement (JWC) to the base grade of the post. JWC supplements are conditional on the physical demands and/or working conditions of the role.

About this opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to take that next step in their career and join our team as a Highways Area Steward. This role requires the supervision of multiple teams in delivering highways maintenance and construction type work to high standards, ensuring there is focus on performance, safety and quality at all times. As an Area Steward you will be responsible for the supervision of up to 15 members of staff, who will be completing tasks that cover a wide range of services, including minor highway construction, carriageway and footway patching, reactive maintenance, drainage works and Winter Maintenance. You will be required to organise and plan the work of the teams in accordance with programme requirements, as well as identifying, requesting and organising the resources to carry out the work. Alongside this, you will need to carry out appropriate risk assessments and auditing of the work to ensure compliance with health and safety procedures. As well as supervising and motivating your teams, the role involves maintaining and submitting relevant records, carrying out surveys and producing data, and compiling and delivering reports on work related issues and work programmes.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone methodical, knowledgeable and driven, with a proven experience of managing teams and developing work plans to ensure maximum productivity. Knowledge of highway materials and their application, as well as procedures and practices associated with highway maintenance is essential, as is experience in the delivery of the winter service. The right candidate will need to have excellent customer service and communication skills, as you will be dealing with enquiries and complaints, and producing letters and reports as required. You will also liaise with stakeholders and other parties both external and internal to the council. This post also requires the incumbent to take part in adverse weather, winter maintenance duties and other out of hours functions.
